About Us
Doug Hicks is United’s Vice President of Communications. He joined the club in 2001 and previously worked for the Washington Bullets (now the Wizards) and Washington Capitals (still the Capitals). He’s so money that his department has won the MLS Team PR Award for four consecutive years (2004-07). That’s pretty good. He’s a local guy who went to James Madison University before finishing his studies at George Mason University. Doug is married (Hi Carrie!). He enjoys listening to the mellow melodies of the Dave Matthews Band and is also constantly entertained by two crazy cats.
Boris Flores, Director of Hispanic Relations, is not from the U.S. of A. He is originally from El Salvador and oversees United’s various Hispanic initiatives – everything from communications and media relations to advertising, marketing, community outreach and ticket sales. He’s a busy guy. He is the longest tenured member of the communications department, having joined the team in 2000 as the Press Officer. Previously he worked for El Tiempo Latino (it’s in Spanish) as the sports editor. He graduated from George Mason. Despite being from El Salvador, he has a soft spot in his heart for the Argentina National Team.
Kyle Sheldon joined United prior to the 2005 season and currently has the longest title in the department as the Manager of New Media and Public Relations. He previously worked for the Minnesota Thunder (outdoor!) and Milwaukee Wave (indoor!) as an intern and graduated from St. Olaf College (Um Ya Ya!) in Northfield, MN, where he was a highly mediocre member of the soccer team. He almost has an M.A. from Marquette University, but can’t seem to finish off two last pesky classes. He likes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Apple gadgets (especially the iPhone).
Cris Cruz is the newest member of the Black-and-Red, having joined the club early in 2008 as the Communications Coordinator. A native Puerto Rican, Ms. Cruz spent a couple years working for the United States Tennis Association after graduating from Penn State University (she speaks English, Spanish AND minored in French!). She played fütbol growing up and has a few fütbol-playing brothers, too. She also has funny facts about her that you will find funny. Funny!
