Scoreboard watching

Though United isn't playing, it's a big night for supporters of DC. The team's attention will certainly be on the scoreboard this evening as two key games are taking place that will have a huge impact on the Black-and-Red's season.
In MLS play, the Chicago Fire (42 points, second in the East) hosts Chivas USA (45 points, tied for second in the West) in a game that has monster implications for D.C.'s playoff hopes. Should Chicago fall this evening, United will enter Saturday's game in Kansas City knowing a win would put them through to the post-season, regardless of other results. The Fire-Chivas USA game can be seen on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. ET.
In CONCACAF Champions League action, San Juan Jabloteh (Trinidad & Tobago) hosts CD Marathon (Honduras) in the final game of Group B play. United currently sits one point ahead of Marathon in the standings, but needs Jabloteh to come up with its first result of the tournament in order to move on. Because DC holds the tie-breaker over the Honduran side, the Black-and-Red will advance with a draw between the two teams or a Marathon loss. Unfortunately, the game is not being broadcast in the U.S., so fans will have to settle for following updates online.
We'll provide periodic updates via Twitter, as well.

How does a Chicago loss and a DC win give us a lock on second place? Couldn't New England and TorontoFC also win and enter a four-way brawl for second? We only hold the tie-breaker against Chicago, but not against NE and TFC. That wouldn't bode well for DC in a three-way or four-way tie-breaker, I wouldn't think. If we lose second to fall to third (or worse!) in the East, then we would have to worry about Colorado winning and taking one of the Eastern playoff spots, and FC Dallas winning to enter a three-way tie at 42 points for the last spot out of the East. While we do hold the tie-breaker against FCD, in a three-way with another East team, we may not do well there either. Perhaps you have already calculated all the combinations in order to justify your claim. Thanks.

Why is it that the 1998 Inter American Cup against Vasco Dagama was the only one that existed? Did DC United Advance to the World Club Cup after defeating Toluca in the Concacaf Final in 1998? Is the MLS going to stop having the Eastern Conference and Western Conference and just use a league table due to both sides competing with each other for the playoffs? Are teams in the MLS and the Champions league regions ever going to have their season and playoff record counted for standings in the champions league to make it more like the champions league in Europe?
