Getting to know: San Juan Jabloteh

09/29/2009 3:54 PM by Cris Cruz

D.C. United faces San Juan Jabloteh tomorrow in a very important Champions League match. Should United win, and should Toluca beat Marathon on Thursday, the Black-and-Red would be assured a spot in the quarterfinal stage of the region's most important tournament.

United won the first game against San Juan Jabloteh 1-0. Christian Gómez converted a penalty kick to give the Black-and-Red its first ever Champions League win. After defeating Marathon 3-0 on 9/24, United holds the tiebreaker (4-3 aggregate) over the Honduran side. United will look for a win at home to put itself in prime position to advance. San Juan midfielder Travis Mulraine is suspended for the match tomorrow due to yellow card accumulation.

This is what Group B currently looks like:

Toluca (Mexico) 4-0-0, 12 pts.
D.C. United (USA) 2-2-0, 6 pts.
Marathon (Honduras) 2-2-0, 6 pts.
San Juan Jabloteh (Trinidad & Tobago) 0-4-0, 0 pts.

Since hosting United on 9/15, San Juan has not played a Trinidad & Tobago Pro League game.  The League takes a break in September before returning with the Pro League Big Six tournament. The top six teams after the regular season qualify for this tournament to add points to their regular season total. The team with the most points is declared the league winner. This year, two-time defending champion San Juan (11-3-6, 39 pts.) sits in third place after the end of the regular season.

During the league break in September, Trinidad and Tobago sides play in the First Citizens Cup. San Juan Jabloteh made it to the semifinals of the Cup before being knocked out by Joe Public 2-0.
