Twitter giveaway!
04/30/2009 3:31 PM by Kyle Sheldon
We're working our way towards 1,000 twitter followers. I've heard stories about people giving away a prize for their 1,000th follower, so we've nabbed something nice to give away - an autographed Luciano Emilio mini ball.
To make it fair to everyone who has joined us on twitter so far, we're going to select one person from our first 1,000 followers to win the ball. In other words, as of 3:31 p.m. ET on Thursday, April 30, we are just 29 followers away from 1,000. Which means you have to be one of the next 29 in order to be eligble to win the prize. Get following!
P.S. The only reason this prize exists is because Luci accidentally signed a big ol' box of balls that were meeant to be signed by Ben Olsen only. Oops. His mistake is your gain (maybe).
Luciano Emilio fun fact: The Brazilian forward has 35 goals in 62 career MLS games. That's pretty good.

General Manager Dave Kasper has informed us that midfielder John DiRaimondo and defender Anthony Peters will be loaned to the Harrisburg City Islanders for the weekend. The Islanders - who compete in United Soccer League's Second Division - will face Bermuda Hogges FC on Friday evening in Bermuda.
The Isanders are currently 1-0-1 (4 points) and tied for first place in the USL-2 standings, while Bermuda is 0-2 and tied for last place.
DiRaimondo and Peters will return to D.C. on Sunday.

Remember when Benny scored that ridiculous goal in extra time to draw United even with the Revolution?
For his efforts, Benny was named as the Man of the Match and now you can own the very jersey he wore in that game! Mr. Olsen has signed the kit and it's available for your bids now. All proceeds from the auction benefit the club's non-profit arm, United for D.C.

Early season nickname?
04/26/2009 6:38 PM by Digital Media Dept.
Phew! What a comeback! Kyle is still in some disbelief.
So does this team need a nickname? “The Cardiac Kids”? Naw, that is stale and played out. Help us out! What do you think?
No matter what you call ‘em, this is an exciting team and you should come out to seem them play. D.C. United will be at RFK for the next two Saturday evenings. We have some great ticket offers available for fans, so you can’t make excuses. Your team needs you!
MLS game #6: DCU 3 - NYRB 2
04/26/2009 6:29 PM by Kyle Sheldon
Are you kidding me? Two goals in the last minute of the game to pull out a 3-2 come-from-behind victory. Rookie Rodney Wallace scores his first professional goal and fellow rookie Chris Pontius gets his second goal of 2009 and first career game-winner.
More later, but... are you kidding me?
What did you think of the game?
MLS game #6: DCU @ New York Red Bulls
04/26/2009 9:00 AM by Kyle Sheldon
D.C. United is set to face the New York Red Bulls this afternoon at 3 p.m. in what may be their final game at Giants Stadium. With Red Bull Arena to be ready for the opening of the 2010 season and today's match serving as D.C.'s only visit to New Jersey, the Black-and-Red may be seeing the turf at the meadowlands for the last time.
D.C. is coming off an impressive 2-0 win over FC Dallas on Wednesday in a U.S. Open Cup play-in game, while the Red Bulls are looking to recover from a 1-0 loss in Kansas City that saw their starting centerback Carlos Johnson red-carded in just the 2nd minute of play.
Newly-acquired defender Avery John will be in uniform for the first time, after officially signing with United on Thursday.
Today's game can be seen nationally on Telefutura and also heard on the radio - in English (1050 AM) and in Spanish (1540, 1390, 1600 AM). Tune-in to 1050 AM at 2 p.m. for an hour-long preview show.

USOC play-in game: DCU 2 - FCD 0
04/22/2009 10:56 PM by Kyle Sheldon

A comprehensive win from a mix of veterans and young guns. Goals from Fred and Brandon Barklage were the difference as D.C. topped FCD 2-0 at RFK Stadium Wednesday night. You have to like the energy and fight some of the younger guys brought to the pitch tonight. Goalkeeper Milos Kocic (age 23) gets his first career start and pitches a shutout, while Rodney Wallace (20), Chris Pontius (21), Brandon Barklage (22), Andrew Jacobson (23), Marc Burch (24), Greg Janicki (24) and Devon McTavish (24) all see minutes.
Here's what you should be taking a look at post-game:

We'll add more here as it comes online (including video highlights, which will be posted late tonight).
The team will now face the winner of San Jose-New York. Should it win that game, D.C. would advance to the third round of the Open Cup.
So, all things considered, what did you think of the result? If you were at the game, were you impressed with any of the youngsters? Who stood out?

U.S. Open Cup play-in: DCU vs. FC Dallas
04/22/2009 10:42 AM by Kyle Sheldon
D.C. United begins defense of last year's U.S. Open Cup title tonight against FC Dallas. It's a bit confusing, though, so try to keep up... despite winning the championship last year, United did not automaticly qualify for this year's edition. The six MLS teams that finish with the most standings points the prevoius year automatically enter the tournament in the third round. Because eight total teams play in the tournament, the other two slots are decided by play-in games. This year, eight teams are vying for the final two slots in the third round. Should United defeat Dallas, it would advance to play the winner of San Jose-New York.
View the play-in bracket here.
Though tonight's game is a U.S. Open Cup play-in game, it is not officially a U.S. Open Cup match. The play-in format was deteremined - and is run - by MLS. Comprendes?
Tonight's game kicks-off at 7:30 p.m. There is no TV coverage for the game tonight, but it can be heard on the radio in both English (1050 AM) and Spanish (1540, 1390, 1600 AM). You can also follow along via our Twitter feed.

MLS game #5: DCU 1 - Revolution 1
04/17/2009 10:51 PM by Kyle Sheldon
Well, you can't complain there was a lack of excitement in tonight's match. The most telling stat of the night? United outshot the Revs 20-4. Without question, the guys played some of their best soccer of the year. They were stringing passes together throughout much of the first half and created several really solid chances to score - they just couldn't find the back of the net.
Jaime Moreno's assist on the goal gave him 100 in his career and makes him the first-ever member of the 100 goals-100 assists club. That's impressive.
Here's the post-game rundown:
- dcunited.com game story

One probably can't help but be a little disappointed with the draw, but at the same time, salvaging a point at home on a late (very late) goal feels good, too. So, perhaps some mixed emotions? What did you think of the match?

The coaching staff will have a difficult task ahead of them this evening, as nearly every player on the 24-man roster is available. The only two players still listed on the injury list are Josh Wicks (hip flexor straing) and Greg Janicki (post-concussion syndrome), and they're listed as 'probable.'

MLS game #4: DCU 1 - RSL 2
04/11/2009 9:40 PM by Kyle Sheldon
For the fourth year in a row, United failed to get points playing at Real Salt Lake's home stadium. The team scored first, but then conceded a goal minutes later. The final tally came just ten minutes from the final whistle, as Javier Morales put Salt Lake up for good.
The good for United?
- Luciano Emilio found the back of the net for the third game in row.
- Rookie Chris Pontius got his first career assist.
- Fred got his first start of the year and played nearly 70 minutes.
- Santino Quaranta made his first appearance of 2009.
- Andrew Jacobson held his own in his first career MLS start.
The full match recap is available at dcunited.com. You can read a few post-game quotes here.
The team will load up tomorrow morning at 7:45 a.m. to head to the airport. It has just four days to prepare for Friday night's game against its bitter rival - the New England Revolution. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes. Get yourself out to RFK Stadium.

MLS game #4: DCU @ Real Salt Lake
04/11/2009 9:55 AM by Kyle Sheldon
The sun is coming up over the mountains here in Salt Lake City, with kickoff against Real Salt Lake about eight hours away (6 p.m. ET). One of the overwhelming thoughts from everyone here is the excitement at playing on the grass field at Rio Tinto Stadium, rather than the concrete at Rice-Eccles. Previously, visits to Utah have not gone well for D.C. - after capturing a win during RSL's expansion season in 2005, United has lost each of the previous three years, including a 4-0 drubbing last season. The team will look to improve that record today.
A few broadcasting notes - to watch the game on TV, you'll need to either watch MLSnet.com's MatchCenter or via the Direct Kick television package. The game's English radio broadcast will be delayed on WFED 1500 and WTOP 820, until after the Nationals baseball game. You can, however, listen to Tony Limarzi's radio call live on via MLSnet.com. And, the Spanish radio broadcast will be live on the following AM stations: 1540, 1390, 1600.
Now, that we've caught you up there, here's a whole bunch of articles you'll want to read before tonight's game:
- Deep Team and Long Season Keep United's Roster in Flux - By Steven Goff (Washington Post)
- Quaranta gearing up - By John Haydon (Washington Times)
- N'Silu heads United size surge - By John Haydon (Washington Times)

Be sure to check out dcunited, com's gameday edition for additional information and for the game's lineups this afternoon.
In the meantime, let us know what you think about today's game - can the guys reverse the losing streak in Utah? Who do you think we're going to see in the lineup? Finally, how about dropping in a score prediction? We'll choose from those who guess correctly and award two tickets to an upcoming United home game.

Ben Olsen, Bryan Namoff, Santino Quaranta, Chris Pontius and Rodney Wallace star in the video below about the history of D.C. United rookie pranks...
D.C. United is in the midst of a four-team challenge to see which club can collect the most funds for Nothing But Nets during a month-long Major League Soccer initiative that culminates on World Malaria Day on April 25. The market that raises the most money will randomly select one donating fan to win a trip for two to the 2009 MLS All-Star Game in Salt Lake City in July.
Created by the United Nations Foundation, Nothing But Nets is a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. A $10 donation goes directly toward the purchase, distribution and education about the proper use of a long-lasting, insecticide-treated bed net, which can prevent Malaria.
You can donate here.

MLS game #3: DCU 1 - Houston Dynamo 0
04/04/2009 10:40 PM by Kyle Sheldon

D.C. United earned its first win of the very young MLS season, defeating the Houston Dynamo 1-0 at RFK Stadium. Luciano Emilio scored the game's lone goal in the 47th minute. D.C. had to battle during the game's final 20 minutes after substitute Jaime Moreno was given a red card. United withstood the Dynamo's pressure and gutted out the W.

MLS game #3: DCU vs. Houston Dynamo
04/04/2009 8:20 AM by Kyle Sheldon
You may recall how difficult it was to get in last year's home game against the Houston Dynamo. The original game on June 4 was postponed in the 16th minute after severe weather made the field unplayable. The game was rescheduled for July 22, but power outages throughout the day forced the game to be pushed back until the next day. Then, finally on July 23, the game was played - but, not before a three-hour rain/power outage delay. You can read all about that crazy evening here.
Suffice to say, no one wants to see a repeat of last year tonight. The forecast is clear and power hasn't been a problem at RFK of late... Just be sure to come early, as there are a ton of events in the city tonight and the Metro and roadways will be busy.

04/02/2009 4:18 PM by Kyle Sheldon
United's steady defender Bryan Namoff has a mantra this year - Unleash The Namoff.
And it's in full effect. The evidence:
- B. Namoff was recently called "D.C.'s most famous Twittering athlete."
- Last night, he attended LeBron James' party at The Park.
- He recently starred in a viral video for Fairfield Inn & Suites.
- He'll serve as a model in an upccoming event for wife, Nadine.
- And one DC sportswriter recently commented that Namoff's play in the first two games of the season is some of the best he's seen... ever.
And, he's sharing it all with you via 140 character updates each day..

Lots of information in this here post. I'm trying to keep it succinct. Keep up with me.
Bryan Namoff has a wife. Her name is Nadine. Nadine is participating in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Woman of the Year. This campaign raises money for the fight against blood cancer. Nadine and Bryan are putting together a ton of unbelievable events aimed at raising money (while also providing a heck of a good time). You can read all about the possibilites on their blog for the campaign. Got it so far?
The first big event is a fashion show titled 'Couture for a Cure,' taking place on May 7 at Peacock Grand Cafe. In addition to providing an open bar, heavy hors d'oeuvres, a raffle and silent auction, D.C. United players will walk the runaway. Taking part? The list is impressive:
- NAMOFF
- Jaime Moreno
- Ben Olsen
- Santino Quaranta
- Devon McTavish
- Clyde Simms
- Rodney Wallace
- Chris Pontius
- Anthony Peters
Additionally, United staffers Brian Goodstein and our very own Doug Hicks will grace the catwalk.
