We'll soon officially announce the club has acquired central defender Dejan Jakovic.  The 23-year old Canadian comes to the team via a transfer from Red Star Belgrade (Serbia), who he signed with last summer.  With Red Star, he made three league and two UEFA cup appearances.

Prior to joining Red Star, Jakovic spent three years at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where he twice earned First-Team All Region honors.

The promising defender made his full Canada National Team debut on January 30, 2008 in a friendly against Martinique and played every minute of the U-23 team's four games in Olympic Qualifying last summer.

Open Cup defense begins

02/25/2009 11:22 AM by Kyle Sheldon

022508_USOCTrophy_P.jpg

We'll shortly announce via press release that we'll begin defense of our 2008 U.S. Open Cup championship with a play-in game versus FC Dallas on Wednesday, April 22 at RFK Stadium.  Yes, you read that correctly - a play-in game.  The reigning champs aren't given any passes, that's for sure.

The game will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET and serve as Special Game A for half and full season ticket holders.  Call your ticket rep for more info.  Tickets for the general public will go on sale soon - we'll keep you updated.

Since Major League Soccer began playing in the tournament in 1996, no team has repeated as champs.  United almost did, though - after winning its first Open Cup title in 1996, the team fell to the Dallas Burn on penalties (5-3) in the final in '97.  Darn.

Might this be a year for a repeat?

Congratulations to commentor ahelms for coming up with our favorite caption (and winning a copy of the 2009 Media Guide signed by Luci).  For those of you that have been around for a few years, you'll recognize the caption is a reference to a video we shot for the now-defunct BobbyBoswell.com back during Luciano's first year.  It's so entertaining, that it's worth posting again.

D.C. United Stadium proposal FAQ

02/24/2009 1:25 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Looking for the latest details on our new stadium project?  Below is a document that addresses many of the issues surrounding the proposted stadium in Prince George's County.  It's long, but really informative.  Way more after the jump.

D.C. United Stadium proposal FAQ

Last week, D.C. United announced that a bill had been introduced in the Maryland state legislature that would enable the club to build a new stadium in Prince George’s County. The proposed project provides the State of Maryland and Prince George’s County the opportunity to generate great economic impact with very little investment risk, bring increased exposure to their local community and partner with a high profile organization which values the thought to becoming an integral part of a neighborhood. The following questions and answers address specific issues involved in the project.

Why does D.C. United need a new stadium?
  • RFK Stadium is nearly 50 years old and simply cannot work for a professional sports team in the modern era. The basic infrastructure of the stadium is badly in need of repair, but the costs are prohibitive.
  • The majority of Major League Soccer teams play in soccer-specific stadiums, which are the appropriate size and include suites, club seats, and high-level hospitality areas. RFK has none of these amenities.
  • Former RFK Stadium tenants playing in the NFL and MLB have already left for newer facilities.

Why does D.C. United want to build its proposed new stadium in Prince George's County?

  • Prince George’s County is a great location for the vibrant, urban stadium D.C. United has sought since being founded in 1996.
  • This is an extension of the relationship that has existed for many years. The County’s location, infrastructure and diverse demographics are ideal for the team and our fans.
  • Prince George’s County and the State have made clear they want D.C. United to become a more integrated part of their community.
  • We have worked with the citizens of Prince George’s County for years as part of the team’s community efforts – and this is an opportunity to continue and enhance that relationship.
When will the proposed new stadium be built?
  • We hope to begin work by the end of 2009 and be ready for the beginning of the 2012 season.
Where will the proposed new stadium be located?
  • United is considering two preferred sites that seek to make use of existing transportation infrastructure - both are located at or near Metro stations.
  • The team will work with elected officials and community leaders to select the site which provides the greatest benefit to the people of Prince George’s County, the state of Maryland, and to our great fans in the next 30-60 days.

How many games will be played annually at the proposed new stadium?

  • An independent study conducted for the Maryland Stadium Authority at the request of County Executive Jack Johnson projected that there would be approximately 60 events each year at the new D.C. United stadium.
  • These would include about 20-25 United games, Washington Freedom (women’s professional soccer) games, several University of Maryland Men’s and Women’s soccer games, NCAA and ACC championship events, major concerts and cultural events, and a variety of local events.
How many seats will the proposed new stadium have?
  • The new stadium will seat approximately 24,000.
How many parking spaces will the proposed new stadium have?
  • We estimate that the new stadium will require 3,200-3,500 parking spaces. However, we are looking at locations with public and/or private infrastructure or other alternatives, which we might share.
  • We envision the D.C. United stadium as an urban facility, anchoring a new neighborhood of homes, shops, restaurants and offices. Parking created for the development will serve multiple uses. We will also seek opportunities to make use of existing parking.
  • Our strong preference is for a site at or near Metro. We expect that up to 40% of our fans will travel by Metro to the new D.C. United Stadium.
What are the proposed new stadium’s features?
  • The new D.C, United Stadium will be a green, LEED certified facility and will include state of art interactive features for our fans.
  • Our new stadium will seat about 24,000 for soccer, and about 30,000 for concerts.
  • The stadium will feature 50-55 suites, 1,000 club seats, a full service premium client lounge, enclosed concourse, a large format team store and a full service pub style restaurant, which will be open on event and non-event days.

Will the proposed new stadium be used for anything other than soccer?

  • Yes, the stadium will also host major concerts, cultural events and other activities – which is a successful model employed at other MLS stadiums.
  • The stadium will also be used for a variety of community activities.
Who is going to build the proposed new stadium?
  • The Maryland Stadium Authority – which has an impressive track record of building similar projects on time and under budget – will build the stadium. The team will work with the MSA and the County to ensure that the community and our fans have a home they can be proud of.

Will the construction of the proposed new stadium disrupt citizens’ life and county traffic?

  • The new stadium will be strategically located to make use of transportation investments already made by the County and State, minimizing traffic impacts.
  • Most D.C. United games are scheduled for Saturday night, when there is not heavy traffic in the region.
  • Furthermore, if we select a site near FedEx Field, we will schedule games so that they do not occur at the same times as Redskins.

If traffic improvements are necessary, who will pay for them?

  • With the help of the County, we are looking for sites that make use of existing infrastructure, rather than requiring expensive improvements.
  • We are seeking no additional stadium specific infrastructure investment on the part of the State or County.

What similar stadiums around the world will the proposed new stadium look like?

  • While we plan to design a stadium, which draws inspiration from the traditions of European and South American soccer, we also want to be modern and American. So, while we intend an iconic look, we may not “look like” any specific stadium. Some very different stadia, which we admire, include the Phillips Arena in Eindhoven, the Emirates Stadium in London, the BayArena in Leverkusen, the VW Arena in Wolfsburg, and the new stadium in Valencia.
  • The nearly completed Red Bull stadium in Harrison, NJ uses a model that connects transit, retail and restaurants and a stadium in an urban setting.
  • For D.C. United, the setting for our stadium is as important as the interior. We want to connect to our community, and serve as a catalyst for economic growth.

Will there be a commitment to minority and local business participation in the design, construction, maintenance and care of the proposed new stadium?

  • Absolutely. United D.C. United is minority-owned, led by Victor MacFarlane and William Chang, and is committed to providing real opportunity for residents and businesses in Prince George’s County.
  • We will work with the MSA to seek qualified Minority Business Enterprises (MBE) during all phases of the project, to ensure those opportunities for qualified local businesses are maximized. MSA requires 20% minority participation.
  • Additionally, we are moving all of our business operations and training facilities to Prince George’s County -- we will be part of the Prince George’s community.
Who will own the proposed new stadium?
  • The Maryland Stadium Authority or some combination of public interests will own the stadium. D.C. United will pay rent to cover its share of construction costs.
How much will the stadium cost?
  • The stadium will cost $180 million to $195 million.
How will the proposed new stadium be paid for?
  • D.C. United and brand new tax revenue generated by the team and stadium will fund the stadium.
  • The team’s contribution is estimated to be $45 million to $50 million dollars, with brand new stadium-generated tax revenues paying for the remainder of the costs in their entirety.

Will citizens and taxpayers residing in Prince George’s County, or elsewhere in the State of Maryland, have to pay for the proposed new stadium?

  • No. The financing plan is entirely comprised of funding from D.C. United and brand new tax revenue generated by the team and stadium. Our proposed financing plans do not draw on the existing tax base or require lottery funds!

Will the Maryland Stadium Authority have to float bonds for the proposed new stadium? If so, how will the bonds for the proposed new stadium be paid for?

  • The Maryland Stadium Authority will issue bonds that will be repaid by rent from D.C. United and brand new tax revenue generated by the team and stadium. The Authority will not use existing taxes to repay the bonds.

What is the likelihood that the new stadium-generated taxes fall short of their projected levels?

  • The tax projections contained in the independent Crossroads Report are conservative in a number of areas. Moreover, the financing plan assumes growth rates on tax revenues well below the team’s historical pricing growth.
Are ticket prices going to go up?
  • D.C. United doesn’t anticipate dramatic increases, though there will surely be some increase. However, we will have a lot of different type of seats in the new stadium -- modern suites, club seats with amenities, fantasy seats, we might even have standing room areas. In the end, we want to be sure that everyone who wants to attend our matches has a category of seat which is right for them.
  • With seats currently available for as little as $22 on the day of the game, attending a D.C. United game provides an excellent value for those who want to see professional sports. We will continue to offer price advantages to our season ticket holders, and will continue to offer group-pricing options and special promotional offers. Furthermore, we’ll continue to work with community programs, particularly those assisting children in need, to provide complimentary tickets to our games.
  • We are confident the improved amenities of our stadium will show our fans that we are working hard to provide them a better experience in every way.

How will a new stadium benefit Prince George's County and the State of Maryland?

  • The new D.C. United stadium will generate $65 million to $80 million annually in economic impact in Maryland, the equivalent of more than 1,000 jobs. (Source: Crossroads Consulting Report, September 2008, commissioned by the Maryland Stadium Authority).
  • The two-year construction phase, slated to commence within a year, will produce about $300 million in estimated economic activity. Construction alone will create more than 250 full time jobs.
  • The team is moving its headquarters of more than 80 people to the community.
  • We will have internship opportunities and training programs in sports management and related areas.
  • The new D.C. United Stadium will be a regional attraction, drawing fans on a regular basis from all surrounding jurisdictions, and annually from all 50 states and a number of foreign countries.
  • The Stadium itself will produce approximately 30 new full time jobs, and hundreds of part-time jobs.

How is this going to impact or benefit the adjacent neighborhoods and local community?

  • A new stadium development will lead to the injection of new dollars into the area which can transform and improve a number of issues through the growth of the local tax base.
  • D.C. United has a 14-year history of community involvement that will continue to flourish in Prince George’s County:
  • Serving hundreds of underserved children and families, each year, with United Soccer Club afterschool programming;
  • Promoting education through United Reads, which provides books, school supplies and reading incentives; and
  • Each year, the team offers more than 8,000 children a full game day experience, with free tickets through Kicks for Kids.
  • D.C. United is minority-owned, led by Victor MacFarlane and William Chang, and is committed to providing real opportunity for residents and businesses in Prince George’s County.
  • The LEED certified, green D.C. United stadium will anchor a neighborhood of homes, shops and offices – connected to the rest of the Prince George’s community.
Is there a name for the new Stadium yet?
  • No, there is not.

Will the D.C. United corporate offices also be located in Prince George's County?

  • Yes, as will our training facilities.

Will D.C. United be a corporate partner with Prince George's County and the State of Maryland? If so, how?

  •  D.C. United is not only committed to being a part of the in Prince George’s community, but a leader – in sports, in entertainment and in positive economic growth.
  • We will work in many ways with existing businesses in the county. For instance, beginning in 2009, all of the teams coming to play against D.C. United will stay at the Gaylord Hotel at National Harbor – that will produce between 500 and 1,000 room nights and tens of thousands of dollars of food and beverage business.

Will there be any other type of development surrounding the proposed new stadium? If so, what type?

  • It is our intention that the LEED certified D.C. United stadium would anchor a neighborhood of homes, shops and offices – connected to the rest of the Prince George’s community.

Why should the residents of Prince George's County support this proposed new stadium?

  • A new United stadium will generate $65 million to $80 million annually in economic impact in Maryland plus the equivalent of more than 1,000 jobs. (Source: Crossroads Consulting Report, September 2008, commissioned by the Maryland Stadium Authority).
  • The new stadium will attract nearly one million visitors each year to Major League Soccer games and other major national and international soccer matches – drawing fans from, literally, all over the world. The games will be televised regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • The team and the University of Maryland have agreed to work together to attract NCAA Championship matches to the new stadium. Other major events, such as concerts and cultural events, will make the new stadium, and Prince George’s County, a regional destination.
  • D.C. United is minority-owned, led by Victor MacFarlane and William Chang, and is committed to providing real opportunity for residents and businesses in Prince George’s County.
  • The LEED certified D.C. United stadium will anchor a neighborhood of homes, shops and offices – connected to the rest of the Prince George’s community.
  • D.C. United will win championships and serve the community.
  • With 12 major domestic and international titles, D.C. United is the most successful club in the history of American professional soccer;
  • D.C. United has a 14-year history of giving, serving hundreds of underserved children and families, each year, with United Soccer Club afterschool programming;
  • Promoting education through United Reads, which provides books, school supplies and reading incentives; and
  • Each year, the team offers more than 8,000 children a full game day experience, with free tickets through Kicks for Kids.

Jersey numbers update

02/23/2009 5:56 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Thinking about purchasing a United kit this year?  Here are some updates on jersey numbers heading into the season...

  • No surprise that Señor Christian Gomez will reclaim the #10 kit he wore during his first stint with the Black-and-Red.
  • Chris Pontius will take over #13..
  • ...from Ryan Miller, who opted for #2 this year.
  • Rodney Wallace will sport #22.
  • Andrew Jacobson will rock #8.
  • Finally, Ange N'Silu will become the first player to wear #9 since Freddy Adu's departure in 2006.

Other than Ange and Freddy, only two players in United history have worn the #9 kit - can you name them?

Scrimmage set against University of Maryland

02/23/2009 2:50 PM by Kyle Sheldon

On Sunday, the team will take on the reigning NCAA National Champion Maryland Terrapins in a scrimmage at Ludwig Field in College Park.  The game is open to the public and set for kickoff at 1 p.m. ET.  Admission is free.

D.C. United has a number of ties to Maryland, as three current players played their collegiate ball as members of Sasho Cirovski's club - Rodney Wallace (2007-08), Marc Burch (2005) and Domenic Mediate (2001-04).

Come on out, it should be a good one.

Pre-season match #3: DCU 2 - Islanders 1

02/21/2009 11:06 PM by Boris Flores

Christian Gomez and Clyde Simms scored in the second half to lead D.C. United to a 2-1 win tonight over the host Puerto Rico Islanders at Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel in the city of Bayamon. Gomez struck on a lovely freekick in the 58th minute and Simms hit a 35-yard blast in the 66th minute.  The Islanders only goal came on a penalty kick in the 90th minute converted by Cristian Arrieta and just before the final whistle.

The USL-1 side started the game strong and controlled the majority of play in the first 20 minutes. The Islanders threatened early in the 5th minute with a succession of shots in the box but trialist Anthony Peters deflected the initial bid from short distance and a reflex save from Nic Platter on the ensuing rebound kept the game scoreless. Former United forward Nicholas Addlery tested Platter again in the 21st minute but the keeper was up to the challenge, making a diving save on a short angled shot from the left side of the box.

Francis Doe had United’s best chance in the first stanza but his half volley attempt in the box was blocked by an Islanders defender, giving United it’s first corner kick of the game in the 37th minute.

Coach Tom Soehn made six substitutions at the half and the Black-and-Red took full control of the match after Gomez’s strike in the 58th minute after Santino Quaranta was taken down right outside of the penalty box. The Argentine playmaker coolly stepped up to take the free kick and hit a beautiful curling shot over the wall to the near post past a diving keeper Bill Gaudette.

Eight minutes later, Simms corralled a loose ball in the middle of the park and unleashed a 35-yard low blast for a 2-0 United advantage. With the comfortable advantage, United managed the possession of the ball while the Islanders look to counter on the attack. The Islanders only clear scoring opportunity in the second half came in the 83rd minute when Sandi Gbandi beat Platter on a header inside the box that just went wide off of the right post. Luciano Emilio missed a clear opportunity to increment the lead for the visiting side in the 86th minute on a good set up from the left side from Ange N’Silu but the Brazilian striker mis-connected on a tap in from short distance. As the match expired, the referee ruled that an Islanders player was taken down in the box and Arrieta converted the spot kick for the final 2-1 result.

Scoring Summary:
DCU – Gomez 58
DCU – Simms 66
Islanders – Arrieta (PK) 90

D.C. United lineup:
Nic Platter; Bryan Namoff (Domenic Mediate 71st), Greg Janicki, Anthony Peters, (Mamadou Danso 76th), Marc Burch (Rodney Wallace 46th); Chris Pontius (Ben Olsen 46th), Andrew Jacobson (Christian Gomez 46th, Brandon Barklage 89th), Clyde Simms (Devon McTavish 71st), Fred (Santino Quaranta 46th); Jaime Moreno (Ange N'Silu 46th), Francis Doe (Luciano Emilio 46th).

Anthony Peters on trial

02/21/2009 2:36 PM by Kyle Sheldon

022109_AnthonyPeters_P.jpg

Centerback Anthony Peters has joined the team on trial in Puerto Rico.

The towering Peters was born in Baton Rouge, Louisana and played for two seasons at the University of Kentucky (2002-04), before exploring opportunities in Norway and Iceland.  He returned stateside and played the last two years at West Virginia Wesleyan College.  This past fall he was named as the WVIAC Player of the Year - after totaling seven goals and two assists - and to the NSCAA/Adidas Atlantic Region All-American First Team.

Though he played primarily as a midfielder and forward in college, he played as a defender last summer on PDL side Baton Rouge Capitals.  He stands at 6-5, and weighs 205 pounds.  He is not small.  He was born October 24, 1983.

Peters was in training camp with the Crew recently and, in fact, played against United in the two team's scrimmage on Feb. 10.  The big fella created two of the Crew's best chances to score during the game, connecting on two solid headers off of corner kicks in the first half.

I would expect Peters might see the field at some point during tonight's game...

Ange N'Silu on board

02/19/2009 3:15 PM by Kyle Sheldon

021908_NSilu_P.jpg

I just got word from GM Dave Kasper that the team has agreed to sign forward Ange N'Silu, pending receipt of International Transfer Certificate and approval of his P-1 Visa.

Ange, whose full name is Mawete Ange N'Silu, joined the team during its time in Bradenton, Florida earlier this month.  He started both of the team's pre-season games while in Bradenton and notched the team's lone goal in the 4-1 loss to Vejle of Denmark.

You can read a bit more about Mr. N'Silu here

We'll announce his signing officially in the next day or so...

Just a couple of United-in-the-media updates...

Kevin Payne is set to take your question on washingtontimes.com.  Submit your question now and be ready for the 3 p.m. start.

Also, tune-in to Washington Post Live on Comcast SportsNet tonight to see Rodney Wallace chat with host Russ Thaler in an interview shot a couple of weeks ago (which would make it... not live).

Greetings from the "Enchanted Island"

02/18/2009 7:44 PM by Boris Flores

Hello, everyone.  Coming to you live from beautiful Puerto Rico, appropriately known as “la Isla del Encanto” (the Enchanted Island), where the team arrived today to continue pre-season training for the next week.  After settling in at the team hotel in Old San Juan, the guys and coaching staff went for a walk this afternoon at “El Escambron Beach,” one of the finest beaches in Old San Juan.

The team is scheduled to train tomorrow morning at Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel in the city of Bayamon, home ground of the USL-1 Puerto Rico Islanders.  United will face the Islanders in a friendly exhibition this Saturday at Loubriel Stadium.  Kickoff is scheduled for 8pm local (7pm ET).

Following is the 27-man roster that made the trip to Puerto Rico:

GK: Crayton, Kocic, Thorpe, Platter
Defenders: Burch, Namoff, McTavish, Janicki, Danso, Veris, Zaher
Midfielders: Gomez, Fred, Olsen, Quaranta, Jacobson, Khumalo, Miller, Barklage, Mediate, Simms, Wallace
Forwards: Moreno, Emilio, Doe, Pontius, N’Silu

KP chat recap

02/18/2009 12:43 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Club Presdient Kevin Payne recently concluded his live chat on washingtonpost.com.  Following is the full chat transcript which focused primarily on the team's potential new stadium in Maryland.  KP touches on bouncing stands in the new stadium, its proximity to RFK, Metro accessibility and many other things.

Alexandria, Va.: Is the door to stay in the team's namesake, D.C. completely closed?

Kevin Payne: Hello, Steve, and everyone else on the chat. I'm happy to be here to talk about DC United and our stadium project.

We are committed and moving forward with Prince George's County and the Maryland Stadium Authority.

Hyattsville, Md.: Will the club consider using their DP spot when the stadium is done in order to influence more fans and more attention to the team and more people in the stands?

Kevin Payne: We are using one of our DP slots now -- on Luciano Emilio. While it's fashionable in the MLS league media coverage these days to act like only Juan Pablo Angel is worth the DP investment, Luciano has been extremely successful for our team since signing in 2008. He has scored more than 40 goals in two years in all competitions.

We might look at adding a second DP though when we enter our new stadium.

Northern Virginia: According to you and your own study, the largest segment of your fan base derives from Northern Virginia, how do you address those fans who not only helped build the team's fan base (three clubs and counting) but want to enjoy the fun in continuing growing the awareness of MLS, camaraderie at the tailgates, etc., when you move the team even farther away?

Kevin Payne: We are very aware of this issue. I live in Northern Virginia. But the sites we are looking at will not be substantially farther from our fan base than RFK is now.

The bottom line is, we cannot continue in RFK Stadium. We have lost millions of dollars each year we have operated there.

I have spent the last 8 years trying to find a stadium solution in DC, without success. We have been welcomed in Prince George's County and Maryland, and we certainly hope our fans understand these realities.

We will build the best stadium for soccer in America, as befits the best team and fans in the country, and we hope no one will feel the location prevents them from continuing to support us.

I-270, Exit 1: Thanks for answering our questions today. With a new stadium site in Prince Georges County, will you solicit entries for a new stadium design or will the Poplar Point design be sufficient. Also, and more importantly, will there be bouncing stands?

Kevin Payne: We will begin a new design process, as a number of critical assumptions will be different from those made at Poplar Point, regardless of the exact site we decide on.

But, we have asked our architects and engineers, who have been at many of our matches, to figure out a way to keep the "bouncing stands!" May not be possible, but we're gonna try!

Silver Spring, Md.: Any renderings of the proposed stadium we can see?

Kevin Payne: Not yet, but hope to have initial concept drawings later this spring.

Burke, Va.: Can you tell us something about where the new stadium will be, and will there be Metro access and affordable parking?

Kevin Payne: We have said one of our priorities is to try to locate at or near Metro. 5 of the 7 sites we are looking at fit that bill. This is a big priority for us, though there are many factors and there are no guarantees.

We will certainly do everything to keep the D.C. United experience affordable.

Arlington, Va.: How much are ticket prices likely to rise once the new stadium is built?

Kevin Payne: We don't anticipate dramatic increases, though there will surely be some increase. But, we will have a lot of different type of seats in the new stadium -- modern suites, club seats with amenities, fantasy seats, we might even have standing room areas! We want to be sure that everyone who wants to attend our matches has a category of seat which is right for them.

Bethesda, Md.: Does or will the Maryland Stadium Authority have the resources to build the new stadium? It seems in general that construction loans in general face unforeseen futures.

Kevin Payne: The state of Maryland and the Stadium Authority have a very strong credit rating and issuing bonds should not be a problem.

Rockville, Md.: Is the defense in place for the upcoming season? Any more needs or are you still looking around especially at center back?

Whats the plan for Kosic and is he signed?

Kevin Payne: We're still working on Kosic -- he has not yet signed an agreement. He is making progress in camp, but we have good competition in that position, which is what we want.

We have targeted one more defender to add. We have been working for some months on a younger player we believe has great potential, but that deal has hit some snags recently and we might have to go to plan B. We have several veteran players identified to help bring stability to our back line.

In the meantime, Namoff, Burch, McTavish and Janicki have all come into camp in great shape and seem intent on ensuring that no one takes their job!

Alexandria, Va.: Is there somewhere we can get more details on the proposed stadium sites? Some places in PG county are a lot closer to your Virginia fans than others.

Kevin Payne: We have not published the stadium sites and will not do so for a bit longer, for a number of reasons.

We want to be sure the communities around our sites are comfortable with our plans, and of course letting our locations get out might affect price!

I can tell you that all of the sites are within a matter of a few miles of each other.

I understand that for many of our fans from Northern Virginia crossing the river is a psychological barrier, but none of the sites are more than about 5 miles from RFK, so I think when people really take a look at things they will see that there is no undue hardship associated with this move.

Arlington, Va.: Can you itemize what you are looking for in the seven sites that you mention? Metro is one priority, what are the others?

What kind of fan preferences are you taking into account? I for one, would prefer the Orange line so I don't have to change trains. Plus, for someone who may arrive on Amtrak or the MARC trains, they wouldn't have to change Metro lines.

Finally, at what point in the process will you be able to discuss stadium amenities like food/drink and the cost of tickets?

Thank you.

Kevin Payne: Other issues we are considering include transportation generally -- is the site served by a good road network? Will there be appropriate mixed use development around the stadium -- shops, restaurants, homes, to be sure the area around our stadium is lively and our stadium increases economic vitality. A big one is trying to take advantage of existing infrastructure, whether that be roads, parking, etc.

Arlington, Va.: As original season ticket holders, my wife and I look forward to DC United having its own stadium (even though the trip will be a little longer). Do you have estimates of how many jobs will be created during construction? And how many permanent jobs will be associated with the stadium in PG?

Kevin Payne: The overall economic impact of the stadium is estimated at $65 to $80 million per year, according to the MSA's independent study. That is estimated to produce the equivalent of 1200 full time jobs throughout the economy of the state and county.

During the two year construction period, the impact will be closer to $300 million, and several thousand jobs will be created throughout the economy. The number of jobs specifically at the stadium construction site will be smaller than that but still very substantial -- many hundreds.

Long term employment at the stadium will depend to some extent on design, but will include at least thirty full time stadium positions and hundreds of part time jobs.

Springfield, Va.: Will long-time season ticket holders have first-subscriber priority for seats at the new stadium, based on the year in which tickets were first purchased?

Kevin Payne: You should contact your ticket rep, but we will certainly be respecting the allegiance of our long time fans through a priority list for season tickets at the new stadium. That list exists today, and you should be sure you're on it.

To finish answering a prior question, we plan a variety of ways of asking our fans what they want in the new stadium. Among other things, we plan an interactive "focus group" on our DC United.com website, in which we will try to talk about qualitative issues. We intend this to be the most iterative process possible.

Springfield, Va.: I have had some negative things to say about the move on Steve's blog over the past few days. This is all very reassuring -- particularly the part about the proximity to RFK. Thank you.

Kevin Payne: Thanks for keeping an open mind. Change is always a bit upsetting, but the foundations of who DC United is and our relationship with our fans will not change!

Columbia Heights: Hi Kevin...thanks for taking the time to talk to us fans.

When comparing DCU's current squad to other teams in the East, how do you feel we compare? What are some of the weaker points that we need to address?

Kevin Payne: We feel good about our group -- but we know its early days. We believe our draftees will be productive, and we feel very good about the condition of our returning veterans. Its great to have Gomito back.

We felt if we could have stayed healthy last year we would have competed with anyone, and we are ready to fight for the East and the MLS Cup this year.

Frederick, Md.: There has been some speculation on a name change for DCU. This got even more muddied during the press conference. Can you reassure some of us that you will keep United under the same name.

Kevin Payne: We have no intention of changing the most recognized name in American soccer. We have always thought of ourselves as a regional team -- the fact we have season ticket holders from so many states proves that point!

We will be very much a part of the community in Prince George's County, but we will be D.C. United.

Washington, D.C.: When groundbreaking time comes, will there be an event where fans can come and put a spade in themselves?

Kevin Payne: That's a great thought...you'll forgive us if we've not yet planned the itinerary for the ground breaking!

Arlington, Va.: I've seen the opening date potentially listed as late 2011 or definitely by 2012.

We know stadium planning and construction can hit delays, so how confident are you in this estimated time-line, and what would it take for DC United to play part of their 2011 season a home venue other than RFK?

Kevin Payne: I am quite confident in 2012. Getting into the stadium in 2011 would require everything to happen on time or ahead of schedule -- and we all know how likely that is! We expect to play at RFK until we open the new stadium.

When we leave RFK, we will want to have one heck of a big party to celebrate one of America's iconic sports venue, and the home where we and our fans have shared so much success!

Reston, Va.: Is it nice to be wanted and welcomed by a government?

Did the team need to compromise from your earlier efforts in order to get a workable deal in PG County? Or was it a fairly easy negotiation process.

Wherever you built it, this Northern Virginian will be there.

Kevin Payne: I appreciate your comments -- I, too, live in Reston, and I can tell you that the sites we're looking at are really not much farther than RFK.

It is nice to be wanted! Maryland has a great, professional approach to analyzing stadium opportunities, and the folks in Prince George's County have been wonderful.

The negotiations have not been particularly difficult, everyone has had the attitude of getting something done, so that really helps.

Potomac, Md.: I don't understand. How will you make money if you don't own the stadium in Maryland either?

Kevin Payne: We will own the economics of the stadium -- we will be responsible for all operating costs, and collect all the operating income. Who actually owns the building is not as important.

Hyattsville, Md: With a new stadium, do you see U.S. Soccer selecting the site for more of its events?

Kevin Payne: I certainly hope so!

Washington, D.C.: Kevin, Do you think Mayor Fenty had the best intentions to negotiate for a stadium to keep United in D.C., or did he simply not want to see the stadium come to D.C.?

Kevin Payne: We are looking forward to Prince George's County and not backward. We appreciated the gracious statement by the Mayor's office today. We will still be active in DC, as we are and will be in Virginia, in addition to what we undertake in Maryland. We are a regional team.

Washington, DC: Mr. Payne, I understand that on the scale of priorities this would be low, but is there any chance stands on one side in the new stadium might be constructed so that they bounce like the "temporary" stands on the loud side at RFK? The bouncing stands and supporters have become a signature of the Barra and Screaming Eagles, and DCU matches in general. It would add cost, for sure, but also a uniqueness that's tied to the club's history.

Kevin Payne: Mentioned already that we have asked the architects if there is a way to do this. No promises, but we love it too! Will Chang even sits over there sometimes, and that's the first place I go after a big win!

Silver Spring, Md.: How likely is relocation to another city altogether if the PG county stadium deal is rejected by the legislature or derailed like the Poplar Point plan? Or will D.C. United work to find another location within the D.C. metro area?

Kevin Payne: We see nothing to suggest the plans will not move forward on the course we are on. I don't want to speculate about "what ifs..."

Arlington, Va.: Hi Kevin. How are you feeling? Has last year's health issue been completely overcome?

Kevin Payne: I feel great, thank you. I will feel even better the day we stick a shovel in the ground, and better yet the day we win our first match in our new, sold-out stadium! (With bouncing stands, and the loudest fans in Major League Soccer.)

Chester, PA: Kevin, thanks for doing the online chat. Will you be working with Red Bull and Philly to create a Mid Atlantic visiting fan policy. Obviously, with you and RB moving into smaller grounds you won't simply be able to put the visiting fans in the upper deck.

Kevin Payne: Yes we will absolutely do that...I look forward to the day -- and its coming -- when we have to have a real visiting fans policy!

Washington, D.C.: A significant aspect of the current gameday experience is tailgating. In addition to being a lot of fun, tailgating gives the supporters groups an opportunity to do much of their pre-game organization and planning for things like tifo displays. The descriptions of the stadium plans so far -- an urban stadium style, without surface parking lots -- suggest tailgating at the stadium will be hard-to-impossible. Any insights here?

Kevin Payne: We recognize the importance of tail-gating, and are hoping to find a site which still permits that while at the same time taking advantage of metro. This would have been a bigger problem, frankly, at Poplar Point. We hear you on this and it's very much on our minds.

Bethesda, Md.: Will DC United be able to be profitable now that you have a new lease with RFK that allows you access to parking, advertising and vending revenue?

Kevin Payne: No we will just lose less!

Hyattsville, Md.: Kevin,

Ultimately, what was the biggest roadblock towards the D.C. government not approving your proposal at Poplar Point?

Also, how will the target market or demographics of the fan base change being farther away from more affluent population in VA and closer to a more diverse yet less well off population in PG county?

Suggestion: Build it with immediate access to the new proposed purple line on Metro!

Thanks!

Kevin Payne: We hope our fan base will not change very much at all. In fact, we hope to expand it by adding more folks from Anne Arundel, Howard County, and Baltimore City. Prince George's has been a growing source of fans for us, and of course we expect that to jump.

San Jose, Costa Rica: Was there a reason for why the potential size of the stadium was reduced from the 27,000-seater as first proposed for Poplar Point to the 24,000-seater y'all want to build in PG County?

Kevin Payne: We felt it made more sense -- it's called value-engineering. We would like to have every game sold out at 24,000 seats!

H Street, D.C.: I'm really intrigued by the stadium cost arrangement in P.G. County, where the state's portion of the cost will theoretically be covered entirely by tax revenue generated at the stadium itself. Has this sort of deal ever been tried before? If it works, it strikes me as very elegant and a possible blueprint for stadiums in the future. Thanks, and Vamos United!

Kevin Payne: The public share of the stadium cost will be financed through taxes generated by the stadium and the team. A large percentage of that amount is actually collected at the stadium -- but that is not all the tax benefit the state realizes. Case in point, we are moving all of our visiting teams this year to the Gaylord National Resort at National Harbor. Without this deal, that business would have remained in the District.

Murfreesboro, Tenn.: Mr. Payne,

I remember the design of the potential stadium at Poplar Point being different than what some would say is the "cookie-cutter" model of many new MLS stadiums. Have there been any preliminary discussions on the design of the stadium in P.G. County?

I know many fans are hoping to see it look more unique like the New York Red Bulls stadium that is currently under construction.

Kevin Payne: This will not be a cookie cutter stadium. It will bear witness to the heritage of great stadia around the world, but we hope to make it modern and American at the same time. We love the Red Bulls design and can't wait for it to open. We will have certain general similarities, but lots of differences too.

Springfield, Va.: Sort of hate to ask, but are there concerns about the viability of MLS in the face of the downturn?

Kevin Payne: No, the league is hard at work negotiating expansion. It's a tough time for all, but we will come through it.

Hanover, Pa.: Kevin - much of the angst about the new stadium plans come from Northern Virginia season-ticket holders who, as someone who drives two hours each way when I go to a game, seem to have a warped sense of entitlement.

With that off my chest, does the team plan on having something between the half-season plans and the flex tickets? Even now, I would hope there could be a four or six-game plan that would let you pick the same seats every game.

A full plan is not the only way to support the team, so I hope the team will be creative to help people who love the team and want to support it, but just can't make it every game.

Thanks and good luck to the entire organization this season.

Kevin Payne: We want to get a lot of feedback from our fans on every part of their experience, including ticket packages. We want to be sure folks like you, who travel so far to support your team, have a plan that works for them. Thanks!

Bethesda, Md.: One of the reasons I enjoy going to football or baseball games in Baltimore is that the stadiums are located within walking distance of various and sundry watering holes and restaurants on Federal Hill and the Inner Harbor. Will their be any such amenities located within walking distance of the proposed P.G. County soccer stadium?

Kevin Payne: That is a major priority. It may take some time, given the economy, but we want to be in the middle of a vibrant community with lots of vitality and entertainment options.

Bethesda, Md.: When Poplar Point was the focus of attention, the stadium was just a part of a proposed major development project involving retail and a possible hotel, which is the kind of project Mssrs. McFarlane and Chang favor as potential moneymakers. But it seems that the "urban stadium" site in PG County will not offer those development possibilities. Why, then, has the ownership embraced this move?

Kevin Payne: Will and Victor have always been committed to what is best for the team long term. While they have a vast real estate background, and were interested in opportunities around Poplar Point, the notion that their only interest in that project concerned the real estate was absolutely false. They are deeply committed to the team, and the new stadium.

Arlington, Va.: Hi Kevin. It's been a rough week for your NOVA fan base.

Can you help the fans understand why the situation at RFK is so dire that the ownership would change its geographic focus just to get a new stadium sooner rather than later? Why is renting the old stadium so unprofitable? RFK didn't seem to stop the club from winning championships all the way up to 2004...

Go United!

Kevin Payne: No suites, no suitable hospitality areas, poor concourse circulation, substandard concession facilities, an antiquated infrastructure, etc. make the stadium non-viable long term. It's also way too big, and it would be extremely costly to make it work.

Laurel, Md.: Great news about the new stadium. Keeping loyal fans on board during the move must be a priority for you. Will fans have any opportunity to input into plans under consideration? Would retiring the number 12 in honor of your fans be something to consider?

Kevin Payne: Our fans are the most important factor in our thinking, and we cannot thank them enough for their support. I know a move to a different location will cause disruption for some. But I promise, we will build a stadium we will all be proud of...and we will find an appropriate way to recognize the best fans in the DC area when the new stadium opens!

I want to thank everyone for their interest. We'll be talking with you lots more in the days and weeks ahead. Don't forget to get out and support us this year -- we're very excited about our team, and we have a couple of young players we think your gonna love! Thanks again. Kevin

Mamadou Danso acquired

02/13/2009 5:33 PM by Kyle Sheldon

021309_Danso_P.jpg

We just got word from General Manager Dave Kasper that the team just acquired defender Mamadou Danso via the waiver ranking order (though, we're not sure what that means).  He left college early to sign with MLS.

Said Kasper of Danso:  "We are pleased to have obtained Mamadou from the MLS waiver process.  He is a strong central defender with a big, physical presence and we look forward to giving him an opportunity to earn a spot with D.C. United."

Danso is a natural center back, but played forward last year at Southern Polytechnic University (in Georgia) and did pretty well while there, scoring 19 goals and notching six assists.

Said his head coach Kom Momeni:  "He has always been very reluctant to play as a forward, as his natural position is a center back.  He will be a professional in that position.  He never felt comfortable as a Forward. He just did it because it was best for the team."

After being named the 2008 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Player of the Year, Offensive Player of Year, First Team Selection ('07 and '08) and Newcomer of the Year ('07), Danso was honored by the NAIA as a member of the 2008 All-America Honorable Mention Team.

Gomez returns

02/13/2009 5:23 PM by Kyle Sheldon

021309_Gomez_P.jpg

The guys took the field today on the RFK Training Fields in their first practice session since Bradenton.  It also marked the official return of Christian Gomez, who joined the team for the first time since being brought back to United earlier this week.  The Argentine took part in the day’s hour and forty-five minute training session.  A number of English and Spanish media were on hand to talk to the 2006 League MVP, and we managed to get a few excerpts of what Gomez, Santino Quaranta, and Coach Soehn had to say after training.

Christian Gomez [via translation]
On re-adjusting to D.C.
“I don’t think it will take long for me to get accustomed to this group of guys. As some of you might have seen today at training, D.C. plays the same brand of soccer, an attractive style. I know most of these guys and I don’t think it’ll take long for me to get accustomed to them again.”

On how it felt training again
“It’s obvious when you haven’t trained for a couple of months, and your body is shocked at first. I hadn’t trained with a group of players the way I did today in awhile, so your body feels it afterwards.”

On the expectations of his return
“When you first arrive to a club – or in my case coming back for a second time – I would call it a good pressure, because you want to have a good season, win a championship. It’s something a player cherishes to have that sort of pressure.”

Santino Quaranta
On Gomez
“Personally I am excited to have such a good guy back. He’s been such a good teammate and a good person for this club. It’s really going to help us out a lot to have a guy like Christian who has so much experience and has done so much for this club.  Everybody’s really upbeat -- once you have a relationship like we had together, you just pick right back up, and it’s a good feeling. It feels like it used to be around here, and that’s a good thing.”

On where Gomez fits in
“The way he plays – you surround him with the right players and the right formation and he’ll excel. He’s one of the best players in this League still. There’s so many different ways you can play Christian, and that’s a good thing for our team this year.”

Tom Soehn
On Gomez
He looks happy. I think he’s really happy to be back.  He’s got a locker room full of friends, and we’re happy to have him back.

On the team
I think the important thing for this year is we’re looking to have a team that’s got depth that can adjust to so many different styles. We’ve been real happy with some of the young kids we’ve brought in – it’s going to be a real competitive roster. Having as many options as you can is always something that makes you unpredictable.

Shortly, RFK Stadium will be named as the venue to host the U.S. Men's National Team in its World Cup qualifying match versus Costa Rica on October 14.  Did you know RFK Stadium is the site of the most U.S. wins of any venue in the world?  The U.S. Men are 11-3-4 all-time and have averaged 30,526 fans during games at RFK Stadium.

Will you be there?

Jacobson signed

02/10/2009 4:42 PM by Kyle Sheldon

021009_Jacobson_P.jpg

We just officially announced that we've signed midfielder Andrew Jacobson (pending receipt of his international transfer certificate).   We originally picked him in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft in the second round (24th overall), but he decided to test the waters abroad and eventually signed with Lorient in France.  After a season there, he decided he wanted to be back in the states and joined the team in D.C. for the start of pre-season.

“We are excited that Andrew is on board at D.C. United,” said United General Manager Dave Kasper of Jacobson. “He is a versatile two-way midfielder that has great technical ability and his size and work rate afford our team several options within the midfield.”

He played 49 minutes in last week's game against Vejle in a defensive midfield role and played 38 minutes in this morning's 2-1 win over Columbus, before leaving with a slight hamstring strain.

He's back

02/09/2009 5:01 PM by Kyle Sheldon

010909_Gomez_535.jpg

Christian Gomez is, once again, a member of D.C. United.

The Argentine midfielder was officially acquired today from the Colorado Rapids, along with 23-year old goalkeeper Mike Graczyk, a international roster spot and salary cap considerations. In exchange, United sent Colorado Ivan Guerrero, its second Designated Player roster spot, and a 2010 SuperDraft second round pick.

During his first stint (2004-07) with the Black-and-Red, Christian helped the team capture three trophies - the 2004 MLS Cup and two Supporters' Shields (2006, 2007).  He also garnered League MVP honors in 2006, was a three-time member of the MLS Best XI (2005, 2006 & 2007) and a three-time All-Star (2005, 2006 & 2007).  He's good at soccer.

Welcome back, Christian.

Roger departs

02/08/2009 5:00 PM by Kyle Sheldon

020809_Roger_P.jpg

A quick update:  Brazilian defender Roger has departed the team and returned to his native Brazil.

Said United General Manager Dave Kasper:  “Roger has decided that it is in his best interest to return to Brazil.  Thus, we will not conclude his signing.  During his time with us, he was a consummate professional and we wish him the best in the future.”

Roger (full name: Roger Machado Marques) joined United on trial prior to the team’s departure for Bradenton, FL last week.  The 33-year old defender previously played for Gremio (Brazil), Vissel Kobe (Japan) and Fluminense (Brazil).

The weather has turned here in Bradenton and, for the second day in a row, the guys enjoyed sunshine and temperatures in the 70s.  Saturday morning saw a 11-v-11 intra-squad scrimmage, though a handful of players were rested due to soreness or small knocks - including Chris Pontius, Ben Olsen, Santino Quaranta, Fred and Andrew Jacobson.  Kyle Veris joined the guys on the sidelines after taking a nasty blow to the eye courtesy of an elbow.  You can see a better shot of the bloody tear drop here

At the Saturday evening session, everyone was put through a circuit training series  - as teams of two rotated through strength and speed exercises.

Sunday morning brought another 10 a.m. practice and included a long warm-up, some crossing and finishing drills and then a scrimmage with neutral players around the outside of the field.  Intensity was high and the play was scrappy - something you like to see early in the year.

This evening, the guys will be put through a short pool workout and enjoy the rest of the evening off.  The team will be back at it tomorrow, as it looks ahead to Tuesday's scrimmage with the Columbus Crew.

Bradenton: Day 4

Day four is almost in the books.  This morning's session saw the team participate in one of its favorite workouts - a small sided scrimmage on a field a little bigger than half the full field.  Coach Soehn puts together three teams of eight players each and they play 10 minute games, with the winning team staying on the field.  If you looked at our Flickr account earlier today, you might have seen a photo of Bryan Namoff and Santino Quaranta who were showing off their blue pennies as the winning side.

After lunch, I wandered into Marc Burch and Clyde Simms' room and came across one of the go-to activities for guys while here in Bradenton - Mario Kart on the Nintendo Wii.  The battles were heated, as you can imagine.  Without giving too much away - as I think this topic is worthy of a full-on post - I'll tell you that there is a trophy, modeled after the Stanley Cup.  Any guesses as to which player is the Mario Kart champ?  More on this soon.

This afternoon's session was short - a simple 12-minute run for the guys and a stretch, just to get the legs moving.  Tomorrow, they'll go back at it hard with a morning session.

Just a couple of photos added to Flickr

Oh, and yes, rookies have to do a lot of the grunt work during pre-season.

A few post-game quotes

02/05/2009 5:15 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Just a few quick quotes from Rookie Rodney Wallace and Head Coach Tom Soehn following today's game...

D.C. United defender Rodney Wallace
On playing the first game of 2009:
"It was exciting to finally play a real game against a different opponent.  We've been practicing for a while now and we were waiting to get out there and do our thing."

On the game:
"It was good - it was a fast paced game, but we did a decent job adjusting.  We just need to work on the details defensively and offensively and I think we'll be fine."

On Vejle:
"They were more connected  as a team, they've been playing together for longer.  They're ahead of us fitness-wise in their season and they were good.  But, we gave it a good effort and we just need to get back out and spend these days in Bradenton just trying to get better, formation-wise, technically - we've got to put the pieces together."

United Head Coach Tom Soehn
On what positives can be taken from the game:
"Today was a day where we got to play our trialists and our young guys and figure out exactly where they're at, so there's a lot to be gained from a day like today."

Pre-season match #1: DCU 1 - Vejle 4

02/05/2009 5:01 PM by Kyle Sheldon

With a team made up almost entirely of trialists, United fell 4-1 to Vejle Boldklub of Denmark this afternoon at IMG Academy.  On just his second day with the team, Ange N'Silu scored the Black-and-Red's lone goal.  Three of Vejle's four goals came in the first half, as the two team's played to a 1-1 draw in the second stanza.

Vejle's first goal came in the 18th minute when their forward collected the ball deep in the right corner and turned towards net.  With two teammates waiting on the back post, he sent a ball towards the back stick that sailed over the head of goalkeeper Milos Kocic and snuck into the back of the net.

In the 33rd minute, a loose ball was collected near the half by a Vejle midfielder, who then sprayed it wide left to a sprinting forward.  The forward hit a first-time cross into the box, where the club's other front-runner struck the ball with his first touch into the lower left corner of the goal, just past an outstretched Kocic.

Vejle's third goal of the half came in the 44th minute when a turnover at midfield put United on its' heels.  The quick counterattack put a forward behind the defense and in alone on Kocic.  The goalkeeper came off his line and managed to get a part of his body on the shot as he fell to the ground, slowing the ball down, but the forward continued his run behind Kocic and finished with ease from a few yards.

With significant changes made during halftime, United came out and got a goal back in the 49th minute.  Boyzzz Khumalo collected a pass deep in the right corner from Chris Pontius and sent a diagonal cross from the end line through the box.  N'Silu corralled the ball with his first touch, turned towards the goal and struck a low shot with his right foot that snuck past the goalkeeper and into the lower right corner of the net.

The game's final tally came just ten minutes from the final whistle when a ball over the top found the foot of a Vejle forward, who turned and struck a ball from a tough angle on the right side of the field that slipped past goalkeeper James Thorpe.

Scoring summary
17th minute - Vejle
33rd minute - Vejle
44th minute - Vejle
49th minute - Ange N'Silu (Boyzzz Khumalo)
80th minute - Vejle

United lineup:  Milos Kocic (James Thorpe 45);  Devon McTavish (Ryan Miller 45), Greg Janicki, Kyle Veris (Domenic Mediate 45), Rodney Wallace (Mike Zaher 62); Santino Quaranta (Boyzzz Khumalo 45), Andrew Jacobson (Taiwo Atieno 49), Bob De Jong (Joe Vide 45), Chris Pontius; Francis Doe (Brandon Barklage 45), Ange N'Silu (Bob De Jong 81).

Pre-season match #1: DCU vs. Vejle Boldklub

02/05/2009 12:33 PM by Kyle Sheldon

We're an hour and a half from kickoff against Danish side Vejle Boldklub.  As a reminder, I'll be providing updates via our Twitter account, so join us there around 2 p.m.

A number of the senior players will not be in uniform for this afternoon's match and will do some work on the side with our strength and conditioning guys.  Those that will not be playing in the game include:  Jaime Moreno, Ben Olsen, Luciano Emilio, Fred, Bryan Namoff, Roger, Clyde Simms and Marc Burch.

With that in mind, here is the team the coaching staff will start:

------------N'Silu---------------Doe------------
-----------------------------------------------------
Pontius------------------------------Quaranta
-----------De Jong-----Jacobson------------
-----------------------------------------------------
Wallace-----------------------------McTavish
---------------Veris------Janicki---------------
---------------------Kocic------------------------

Substitutes:  James Thorpe, Evan Bush, Brandon Barklage, Joe Vide, Boyzzz Khumalo, Domenic Mediate, Mike Zaher, Taiwo Leo Atieno.

So, it's a great opportunity for some of the young guys to show what they can do in a game setting.  Finally, I don't speak Danish, but it looks like Vejle's lineup can be found here

Bradenton: Day 2

02/04/2009 8:00 PM by Kyle Sheldon

It hasn't gotten any warmer here in Florida.  In fact, it was probably colder (and definitely windier).

Head Coach Tom Soehn ran the guys through two sessions today.  This morning's session included some technical ball work and a lot of footwork, as well as a 9-v-9 scrimmage, of sorts, with three goals.  The evening session was made-up of some shadow play and then a bit of conditioning.

One additional player joined the team on trial last night and trained at both sessions today - 22-year old forward Mawete Ange N'Silu.  Mr. N'Silu goes by his middle name, Ange, and is originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.   Six feet tall and about 185 pounds, Ange's hometown is Paris, France.  He  spent some time with Le Havre AC (see a picture of Anges in action at the bottom of this page) and was most recently with FC Lausanne in Switzerland.

Tomorrow, the day will start a bit earlier due to the 2 p.m. game versus Vejle Boldklub.  Despite the afternoon game, the team will still train in the morning, but enjoy a long evening after the match.  If you're looking for info from field during the Vejle Boldklub game, you might want to follow us on Twitter, as I'll be providing periodic updates there.

Photos from Bradenton

I just added a couple photos from day 1 in Bradenton - see them here.  More to come.

UPDATE (12:46 p.m.):  I've included a few more shots from this morning's session.

Bradenton: Day 1

02/03/2009 11:42 PM by Kyle Sheldon

This update is coming a bit later than I expected, but at least you'll have something waiting for you Wednesday morning.  The team's first practice in Bradenton this evening saw 27 players take part in training.  The session included a long warm-up followed by two simultaneous possession games before 7-v-7 games to goals.

A couple of new players joined the team today on trial:

  • Evan Bush is a 6-foot, 2-inch goalkeeper from the University of Akron.  With Zach Wells on leave from the team and Louis Crayton back in Liberia with his family, the team needed some depth in goal.
  • Bob De Jong is a 17-year old midfielder who most recently was a part of Ado Den Haag in the Dutch Eredivisie.  He is a native of Leidereorp, Holland.

Tomorrow, the team will begin the two-a-day cycle with a morning and afternoon session. The team's first scrimmage of 2009 has also been finalized.  On Thursday, the guys will face Vejle Boldklub of the Danish Superliga at 2 p.m. on the IMG Academy fields.

For your perusal, here is United's current list of players in camp...

Goalkeepers (3): Evan Bush, Milos Kocic, James Thorpe

Defenders (9):  Marc Burch, Greg Janicki, Devon McTavish, Ryan Miller, Bryan Namoff, Roger, Kyle Veris, Rodney Wallace, Mike Zaher.

Midfielders (8):  Bob De Jong, Fred, Andrew Jacobson, Domenic Mediate, Ben Olsen, Santino Quaranta, Clyde Simms, Joe Vide.

Forwards (7):  Taiwo Leo Atieno, Brandon Barklage, Francis Doe, Luciano Emilio, Boyzzz Khumalo, Jaime Moreno, Chris Pontius.

Summer Camps

02/03/2009 2:41 PM by Cris Cruz

It's never too early to start thinking about the summer. I know I've been wishing for summer before winter even began. So even though it's only February, we've just announced this year's schedule for the D.C. United Academy Summer Camps. The Summer Academy provides a bunch of different training opportunities for kids of all skill levels in locations all around D.C., Virginia and Maryland.

All Summer Academy programs feature first-class instruction from United’s technical staff and players, former professional players and top area coaches. In addition, all participants will receive an official D.C. United Academy ball and t-shirt, a ticket voucher for any 2009 D.C. United regular season home game (with the exception of the Los Angeles Galaxy match) and membership to D.C. United’s Youth Fan Club.

Check out more info on the different camps and the schedule here

Bradenton arrival

02/03/2009 2:40 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Greetings from sunny, but cool, Florida.  We've arrived in Bradenton and the guys are preparing for their first training session this afternoon.  Though the sun is shining, the temperature is a chilly (for Florida) 60 degrees.  I'll check back later this evening after training with an update.

In the meantime, be sure to check out Dan Steinberg's DC Sports Bog.  He's got the inside scoop on United players on the 'Kiss Cam' at the Capitals game and this year's newest hair styles

We spoke to Luciano Emilio, Devon McTavish and Marc Burch after today's training session to get their thoughts on the first week of pre-season and heading to Bradenton, FL tomorrow...

Ivan Guerrero Update

02/02/2009 4:25 PM by Cris Cruz

One player missing from training today was Ivan Guerrero. The Honduran is currently with his National Team and will rejoin United later in the pre-season. Thanks to our intern Juan Figueira for this update.

Following yesterday’s conclusion of the UNCAF Nations Cup in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, midfielder Ivan Guerrero will continue to train with the Honduras National Team until February 12. Guerrero and Honduras will now turn their attention to the World Cup Qualifier against Costa Rica on February 11.

The midfielder has been with his national team since early in the year and played in four out of six games for Honduras in the UNCAF Cup. As the host nation, Honduras wasn’t able to win the tournament and had to settle for third place, nonetheless qualifying for this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. Unexpectedly, Panama surprised everyone and won the Cup for the first time in the tournament’s history. After a 0-0 tie in regulation, Panama was able to beat Costa Rica in a penalty shoot-out.

Already used to getting called up to represent his national team, Guerrero is looking to remain in good form in the final round of qualifying as the “Catrachos” attempt to qualify to their second World Cup berth. He will report to D.C. United pre-season training following the match against Costa Rica.

Final day in D.C.

02/02/2009 9:17 AM by Kyle Sheldon

One more day of cold.

That thought is running through a number of the player's heads with today's final D.C. training session in site.  After training this morning, the team will take off tomorrow for Bradenton, FL - and significantly warmer temperatures.  70 degrees and sunny sounds pretty nice.  As I'll be tagging along, I'm not complaining.  I'll be providing daily updates from IMG Academy and periodic interviews with some of the team's new faces.  Get excited.
