As D.C. United gets ready to face Deportivo Saprissa again in the Champions League, here are some tidbits about how the team has been doing lately.
Since we last played them on September 16, Saprissa has added a win and a loss in the 2008 Invierno campaign in the Costa Rican league. They are now in second place in their group standings (fifth overall) with a 4-3-2 record.
The Purple Monster will be without several of their starters, since five 'morados' have been called up to Costa Rica's World Cup qualifier against Surinam on Saturday. The Costa Ricans will be without midfielders Walter Centeno (goal scorer in the first encounter between the teams), Celso Borges, Alonso Solís and Armando Alonso, and goalkeeper Keilor Navas.
According to Costa Rican newspaper 'La Prensa Libre', young midfielder Yader Balladares said that “Americans have had a tough time playing [in Costa Rica] but we can't rely on history. We have to take this match seriously and score early." Meanwhile, forward Jairo Arrieta, who scored a goal during Saprissa's visit to RFK, added that in order to win Saprissa has to, “play fast, control possession, make combinations and not let [United] control the rhythm of the game."
