Getting to know CD Marathon - Take 2
10/28/2008 11:12 AM by Cris Cruz
Honduran side CD Marathon comes to D.C. tomorrow night to take on the Black-and-Red in a Champions League match. Since last time we played them on Sept. 24, Marathon has battled for the first place in the Honduran National League tournament.
After a 1-0 win over Olimpia on Oct. 18, Marathon sits in second place in the 2008 Apertura tournament. With a record of 9-2-3, Marathon is only one point behind the leaders, Real España, and will only need a few more points to guarantee themselves a semifinal berth.
The same torrential rains that forced Marathon to postpone a Champions League match against Costa Rica’s Saprissa last week, forced the Honduran Soccer Federation to cancel all matches for Week 15 (this past weekend) of the 08 Apertura. According to newspaper La Prensa, more than 670,000 people in Honduras have been affected by the rains and flooding.
In Honduran newspaper Diez, Marathon defender Mario Beata said: “I hope thngs go right for us, we're very motivated and happy with how we're doing right now. It will be tough because D.C. United will try their best even though they're already eliminated but none of the games we've played in this tournament have been easy so we're going in confident that we can get a good result to qualify for the next round."
