Champions League update: Puerto Rico wins! (and other teams too)

09/24/2008 10:46 AM by Cris Cruz

Champions League play resumed yesterday with three goups in action. In United's Group A, Cruz Azul thrashed Saprissa 4-0. The Black-and-Red will look to earn points tonight on the road against Honduran side Marathon. The game will be shown live on Fox Soccer Channel at 10 p.m. ET.

With Cruz Azul's win, this is what the Group A table looks like:

Cruz Azul (MEX) 1-0-1, 3 pts.
Marathon (HON) 1-0-0, 3 pts.
Saprissa (CRC) 1-0-1, 3 pts.
D.C. United 0-0-1, 0 pts.

The other MLS representative, the Houston Dynamo, played a scoreless draw with Panama's San Francisco to earn a road point. Group B play will continue today with El Salvador's Firpo visiting Pumas UNAM (Mexico) at 10 p.m. ET on Telefutura.

The Puerto Rico Islanders continued their surprising run last night by defeating reigning Mexican Clausura champions Santos Laguna 3-1. (Can you tell I'm Puerto Rican?) The win gives the Islanders the early lead in the Group D standings.

Group C will play both of their second-date matchups today, with Joe Public (Trinidad) hosting Olimpia (Honduras) at 8 p.m. ET on Fox Soccer Channel, followed by D.C.'s match. The second game will feature Atlante (Mexico) visiting Impact de Montreal (Canada) at 8 p.m. ET on Telefutura.
