U.S. Open Cup semis: DCU vs. New England

08/12/2008 9:09 AM by Kyle Sheldon

After a disappointing loss Sunday night in New Jersey, the guys are looking forward to tonight's important match with the New England Revolution.  Tonight's game at RFK Stadium kicks off at 7:30 p.m. (ET) and it is not being televised - so get yourself to the stadium!  If you absolutely can't make it, it will be available on the radio in both English (1050 AM) and Spanish (1540 AM) and streaming live on dcunited.com

With a win tonight, United would face the winner of Seattle Sounders-Charleston Battery, which is set for 7:30 p.m. at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC (apparently, you can watch live on USLlive.com).

Lots to read out there in advance of tonight's game - here are a few selections:

  • Steve Goff in the Washington Post on the team's short turnaround after New York.
  • In the Washington Times, John Haydon on the team having little time to dwell on Sunday's loss.
  • From dcunited.com, a few notes on tonight's matchup.
  • On UnitedMania.com, a thorough look at tonight's game.
  • In Boston, Monique Walker writes about the the Revolution's packed schedule for the Boston Globe.
  • Rich Thompson at the Boston Herald says we should expect backup Doug Warren in goal tonight.
  • The Capital Weather Gang has your weather updates throughout the day (it's looking great!).

So, that's that.  Did I miss anything?

Put your predictions in the comments section and you could win two tickets to an upcoming United game.  And get yourself out to RFK tonight!

So the USL will have a live web feed, but MLS cannot?
I am a little worried that the MLS brass does not take this league seriously either...
Do you think they just sit around all day half assing it while they try to get other jobs in the NFL,MLB,NBA?
Or is the entire league run by unpaid interns?

I think DC United might pull this one off. Not if we play like we did on Sunday, of course. I think some of our newly-healthy players will be in better form while, in a fortunate-for-us turn of events, it's New England that has the injured roster. We're still missing some guys, but at least it's a little more fair because of them missing three of their best.

We REALLY need this win. If we do this tonight, then hopefully the final cup will be ours.

I can't wait. I haven't been to the crumbling comfort of RFK since... Wow! the July 15 match against Atlante!

I'm going through some serious withdrawal!

United wins this one, no doubt. I predict Jaime gets another assist tonight (which unfortunately doesn't count toward his MLS accomplishments) and someone likely and another someone unlikely score a goals for United.

Unfortunately, it'll be an ugly game--in no way comparable to the epic 2004 Eastern Conference Final--with a lot of yellow cards.

And, as usual, Taylor Twellman scores against United at RFK.

Game ends 2-1 to the home team.

I agree with you, jgildea. The Open Cup is disrespected every year, and when the USL is doing more to have coverage of this tournament, it just makes MLS look very stupid. I guess the only improvement is FSC showing the final.

I really hope we win this one, we've targeted the Open Cup as very important this year. I know we'll show up for this tonight.
    ----------Moreno----Emilio------------
    ----Fred---Simms---Vide---Quaranta----
    Martinez---Peralta---McTavish---Namoff
    ---------------Wells------------------
United goes up 3-1 before holding on for the 3-2 win. Fred (2) and Emilio score.

    Come on United!!!

I'm going to go along with Stewart there -- without Reis/Howie Mandel between the pipes, I think DCU will get at least 3 in, though Taylor "male model" Twellerman playing probably means 2 for them.

    In a nutshell: 3-2 DC.

    3-1 DC

If I win can I get something other than DC tickets.

I live in Cincinnati and there is no way I could put those tickets to good use.

As the FIRST to pick the score (everyone copied my genius) I would like to lay claim to the dope prize.

You always say that you reserve the right to do whatever you want with this contest, I suggest you change the prize as my distance from DC and financial situation would not allow me to use DC game tickets.

I have requests as a different prize but as a beggar I will not be a chooser.

Actually, I predicted that we would win before anybody. It didn't say you had to predict what the score was going to be.
