D.C. United Reserves Top Red Bulls 2-1

08/31/2008 1:12 PM by Cris Cruz

WASHINGTON, DC (Aug. 31, 2008) – The D.C. United reserves defeated the New York Red Bulls reserves 2-1 Sunday morning at the RFK Training Complex on the strength of two goals by Ryan Cordeiro. With the win, United moves to 5-4-1 (16 pts.) while the Red Bulls dropped to 2-5-0 (6 pts.) in the MLS Reserve Division.

The Red Bulls tested United goalkeeper James Thorpe early in the match, as a free kick from Sinisa Ubiparipovic went directly towards the goal, but fell easily into Thorpe’s hands. However, it was New York who took the early lead when a foul inside the box resulted in a penalty kick for the visitors. Thorpe guessed incorrectly as Gabriel Cichero struck the ball towards the left corner.

United’s best chances in the first half came from midfielder Ryan Cordeiro, who struck several shots that went just wide off the mark. His efforts finally paid off, when in the 35th minute guest player Dwight Barnett had a shot on goal that New York keeper Danny Cepero saved. Cordeiro, however, was able to collect the ball and shoot a low strike towards the far post for the equalizer.

The second half saw a host of substitutions for both teams, as they each looked for the game winner. Only a few minutes into the half, it was Cordeiro again who took a similar shot to his first half goal and again connected with the net to put D.C. United up 2-1.

Both teams had a few opportunities late in the second half but neither could convert. D.C. midfielder Quavas Kirk created a couple of chances but his shots went wide left. With time winding down, the visitors fought to tie the game but could not get the equalizer. The referee blew the final whistle and the match ended in a win for the Black-and-Red.

The D.C. United reserves will again play on September 9 when they visit the Kansas City Wizards.

MLS game #22: DCU 0 - NYRB 0

08/30/2008 9:29 PM by Kyle Sheldon

083008_Guerrero_P.jpg

A missed penalty and a missed opportunity. Darn

The locker room mood was not a pleasant one post-game.  A number of players said it felt like a loss.  In a way, that outlook is a good one - the team isn't happy with a draw at home.  They want to win and feel like they should win.

Another positive was the return of Marcelo Gallardo who came on in the 70th minute.  It was his first appearance since June 29 and he made an immediate difference in the game, releasing several players behind the defense with clever passes.  He will certainly inject an entirely different look as he gets back into shape and back to feeling comfortable with the team.

The team also gets to keep to the Atlantic Cup, as the season series finishes 1-1-1.  With all things being equal this year (including goal differential), United keeps the cup as the previous year's holders.

Additionally, Louis Crayton makes five saves and gets his third shutout in four games.

The focus now turns to Wednesday and the U.S. Open Cup final.  United will play the Charleston Battery in its first championship game since MLS Cup 2004.  In its history, D.C. has played in nine championship games, winning seven of them.  That's pretty good.  The team will look to make it eight of ten Wednesday night at RFK Stadium.  If you don't have tickets, get them now.

UPDATE (11:11 p.m.):  Post-game quotes below and a couple game photos here

D.C. UNITED HEAD COACH TOM SOEHN
On Jaime Moreno’s missed penalty:
The guy’s made a lot [of penalties]. He tried to hit it in the corner and put power on it. Sometimes when you hit it as hard as he did I think you lose some of the accuracy. He put a lot into the game and I’m sure fatigue had something to do with it. Obviously, he’s as disappointed as we are.

On Jaime Moreno needing rest:
We’ve given these guys time off recently and we’re going to keep managing it. It helps getting some guys back [from injury]. Although it wasn’t many minutes for some of them it was important to get them acclimated and playing a little bit. So hopefully we’ll continue to give guys some minutes and it will allow us to rest other guys.

On Marcelo Gallardo:
I think offensively he’s always a threat. We still have to focus on making sure he’s fit enough to do all the work. Tonight it was important to give him some minutes. He injected life. Unfortunately we didn’t come out with the result we wanted. I think everybody was pretty disappointed. Soccer fitness is a key to playing and he’s not there yet but you can still see he’s got some special qualities when he plays. He injected some life.

On Luciano Emilio:
He pulled himself out; he was feeling tight. He’s a veteran and wanted to pull himself out to make sure he’s available [for the Open Cup final]. We’ll evaluate him more tomorrow.

On the match:
I don’t think we were very good with the ball in the first half. We had to make a few adjustments. The game was there to take it. We’ve been better with the soccer part than in the first half so I was a little disappointed coming into the locker room because we talked a lot about possession. I think we got better in the second half. The build-up to the penalty was pretty good soccer. Unfortunately the result of the penalty didn’t go our way.

D.C. UNITED FORWARD JAIME MORENO
On missed penalty kick:
It’s not an excuse you know. I powered IT, I usually don’t power that much and put a little more speed than usual. The keeper didn’t move so it wasn’t a good penalty kick.

On whether he was tired:
I was cramping the last 10 minutes but still, that’s not an excuse.

On the return of Gallardo:
It’s good to have people healthy again. You can see [Luciano’s] struggling now with muscle [pain]. There’s so many games that we play and unfortunately having so many people injured, you don’t have a break. But that’s how it is. You’ve got to keep digging in and keep working.

D.C. UNITED GOALKEEPER LOUIS CRAYTON
On shutout:
It’s for the entire team, we all worked collectively and yes I’m grateful for the shutout and for the entire team.

On having to leave the goal area multiple times:
I know everyone was kind of nervous but I talked to my defender’s yesterday and I told them – It was all planned that we were going to be playing in this lineup because of [Dane] Richards and because of [Juan Pablo] Angel.  I was watching Richards all the time because he was coming from his side, coming across and going behind my defense so I had to come out to cover the situation.

D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER SANTINO QUARANTA
On the game:
It’s good to have games like that this time of year. Both teams fought hard and it felt like nobody really wanted to make a mistake. It felt like a playoff game, it really did. It was a good fight. I think we should have won the game.

On Jaime’s penalty kick:
It’s unfortunate that he missed, he makes so many. He’s our captain, it’s just one of those things. It’s unfortunate.

NEW YORK HEAD COACH JUAN CARLOS OSORIO
On the match:
I think we did enough to win the three points but in a way we let them off the hook. But I’m very pleased to have a clean sheet and contained a very good team going forward, especially at home. A clean sheet will prove to be very good for us and for what we’re trying to do here.

On their defense:
I told the guys this morning I watched Inter against Sampdoria and I watched top players like Stankovic and Figo competing becuase that’s what this professional sport is all about. You have to be able to compete and when you have the ball, you play. We created very good chances today so Juan Pietravallo as well as Seth Stammler were immense in the midfield and hopefully they continue doing their job.

On D.C. United’s play:
They throw everything during the first 20 minutes, they have the support from the fans, which I think is very good. But we controlled the game. They had some possession but they didn’t create that [many opportunities]. I don’t recall a clear shot but there was one when [Luciano] Emilio turned and had a shot on goal. That was when we lost the ball coming off the back. So it wasn’t really that they created a lot. They just played off our mistakes. Aside from that I think we controlled the game and in the first half we should have been up 1-0.

On getting a shut out for the first time against United:
This has to go a long way for the guys that are more familiar with that stuff than me. One thing for sure is that we had the best chances in the first half. I think we’re probably a little bit sad in the locker room because we all know that we deserved the three points.

NEW YORK FORWARD MIKE MAGEE
On the game:
We’re pretty happy with the result. We came in this game knowing it would be an ugly game. We knew we wanted to get a shut out, play hard. We had chances but to come out of a game in D.C. 0-0 is a really big accomplishment. It was one of those games where it’s a battle. It was really hot and humid, guys were cramping as we were running around.

NEW YORK GOALKEEPER JON CONWAY
On Jaime Moreno’s missed PK:
He’s very good at taking PKs. Occasionally he tries to hit it down the middle. I took a chance that that was going to happen and just kind of stayed put. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the guy miss.

On the 0-0 draw:
It just shows how tough this place is to play in. Obviously we’re happy with our effort tonight to get a 0-0 because this place is tough to play at.

MLS game #22: DCU vs. NYRB

08/30/2008 9:30 AM by Kyle Sheldon

United and the Red Bulls meet at RFK Stadium tonight for the third and final time this regular season.  Somewhat amazingly, both teams have earned a 4-1 win at home earlier in the year (United on June 15 and New York on August 10), which means tonight's game will determine the Atlantic Cup winner - given to the team that wins the season series between the two rivals.  Should the game end in a draw, and because the first tie-breaker of goal-differential is knotted up, D.C. would keep the trophy by virtue of being the current holder.

So, what do you need to know?  Tonight's game is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Sports en Español.  If you can't make it out to RFK Stadium and aren't near a TV, you can listen on radio as well - in English on 1050 AM and in Spanish on 1540 AM.

There's lots to read out there in the world of the world wide web.  Here are some of the must-reads:

We'll take your score predictions in the comments section below.  Pick the correct score and you may very well win two tickets to an upcoming United game.

Did I miss anything glaring?

Video: The Bachelor

08/29/2008 5:20 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Earlier this week, Devon McTavish visited the Mix 107.3 studios to promote the radio station's Bachelor contest.  What is the Bachelor contest?  Well, if you take part (and are female), it might culminate in a date with United's young defender/midfielder.  More info here on how to win.

And here's the video from his station visit... What exactly is a "hipster?"

D.C. United will play in its first championship game since 2004 next Wednesday, September 3 at RFK Stadium.  The team has a long history of winning trophies, but the path to get there is never an easy one.  The team needs your support... will you be there?

CCL update: Metapan and Marathon draw

08/28/2008 10:21 AM by Kyle Sheldon

A quick CONCACAF Champions League (CCL!) update from last night... El Salvador's AD Isidro Metapan and Honduras' CD Marathon played two a 2-2 draw last night at Metapan's home stadium.  The two teams will meet in Honduras for the second leg of the two-game, total-goals series on September 9, with the winner advancing to United's Group A.

More info on the CONCACAF website

Who would you rather face (as if you have any idea which team is better...)?

That's the side of Bryan Namoff following Saturday's 3-0 win over the Rapids.  A rapids player's cleats apparently missed the ball (and the ground) and found Bryan's rib cage... either that or a dragon attacked him.  Just another day at the office for ol' #26.

Following two goals in United's 3-1 win over the New England Revolution in the U.S. Open Cup semis, Luciano Emilio was named as the USOpenCup.com Player of the Round.  The Brazilian speaks below about the semifinal win, other championships he's been a part of, playing against the Charleston Battery next Wednesday and his sweet jean jacket (not really, but I kind of wish he did).

DCU on Twitter

08/27/2008 10:47 AM by Kyle Sheldon

082708_twitterbird_P.jpg

We're going to try a little DCU trial run on Twitter.  For those of you who don't know what Twitter is, I'll let them explain:

"Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?"

You can follow us by clicking here.

You can see updates via that webpage and can also get updates sent directly to your cell phone, if you so choose.  If you have an iPhone, check out Twitterific (that's what I'm using and it works pretty well).  Can anyone offer suggestions for the best thing to use on a Blackberry?

Give it a day or two and let us know what you think in the comments below - should we keep it up?

UPDATE:  Just thought I should provide a little encouragement for folks to join us on Twitter.  Join Twitter, become our "Follower," and leave a reply (on Twitter) and you'll have a shot at winning a 2007 MLS Fact and Record Book signed by former United player Alecko Eskandarian.  Yeah, there's only one of these in the world and it could be yours!

CONCACAF Champions League kicks-off

08/27/2008 7:52 AM by Kyle Sheldon

Last night, the inaugural CONCACAF Champions League tournament began with three preliminary round games taking place.  In the first leg of the home-and-away set-up, both MLS squads lost on the road, as Joe Public (Trinidad & Tobago) defeated the New England Revolution 2-1 and Chivas USA fell 2-0 to Tauro FC (Panama) - on one of the worst fields I've ever seen a meaningful game played on.

Most interesting to D.C. fans, though, is the 6-0 win by Cruz Azul (Mexico) over Hankook Verdes (Belize), as the winner of the series will advance to take part in United's Group A.  D.C. and Deportivo Saprissa (Costa Rica) have already secured spots in the group, while Cruz Azul is in good position to lock up the third spot.  The final spot will go to the winner of Metapan (El Salvador) and Marathon (Honduras) who begin their two-game series tonight.

The second leg matches for this preliminary round take place the first week in September, while United begins play in the tournament at home against Saprissa on September 16.   You can see the full schedule here.

Tickets for United's three home matches in CONCACAF Champions League are on sale in the form of a hard-to-beat 3-game pack.  Check it out at dcunited.com

Does anyone know if the Metapan-Marathon game is on TV tonight?  I can't seem to find it listed anywhere...

Video: Fred interview outtake

08/26/2008 5:55 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Fred is from Brazil.  Fred's language of origin is, therefore, Portuguese (I know, I was confused to learn that he doesn't speak Brazilian, too).  Fred also speaks a bit of Spanish - and less English - but whenever he gets interview requests, folks ask him to speak in either of those two languages and not his native Portuguese.

Below is a video from a recent interview Fred did on camera for us, in Spanish... as you'll see, he stumbles over the words first, but then gets thrown off by our videographer's cell phone going off.  Really, this is only funny because Fred has such an infectious laugh!

Devon & Joe want to sell you booze

08/26/2008 2:40 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Devon McTavish is a busy fellow.

This afternoon (around 5 p.m.), he'll be on DC radio station Mix 107.3 taking part in a little promo called The Bachelor.  Tomorrow, he and teammate Joe Vide will be guestbartending at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern in Herndon, VA to benefit the club's non-profit arm, United for D.C.

You can join Devon and Joe - and other DCU staffers - at Jimmy's from 7-8:30 p.m.  In addition to selling you delicious beverages, the two players will be available to sign autographs and take photos (perhaps you can put in a good word for yourself or a friend for the Bachelor contest, too!).

Directions to Jimmy's Tavern can be found here

Audio: Tony Limarzi is excited

08/26/2008 2:23 PM by Kyle Sheldon

A lot of folks have commented on the fact that Santino Quaranta's second half goal against Colorado over the weekend was not nominated for the Goal of the Week (but, Joe Vide's did!).  Unfortunately, Saturday's game was only broadcast on Altitute Sports, who didn't put a camera behind the north goal (as team's normally do) and thus didn't have the best angle to view Santino's dipping, swerving shot.

Do you know who did have a good angle?  The radio voice of D.C. United, Tony Limarzi.  Tony's broadcst booth is near the northwest corner flag and was therefore directly in line with the trajectory of Santino's goal.  THAT is likely the reason he was so excited...

And here's the video in case you want to watch both at the same time..

D.C. United's reserves are in New Jersey this morning, playing the New York Red Bull's reserves in their ninth reserve game of the year.  United is 4-3-1 (13 points) on the season.  We'll provide you with periodic updates below and bring you the full match summary when we receive it.

11:07 a.m.:  New  York now up 4-2.

11:42 a.m.:  United falls to the Red Bulls 5-2.  Final.

UPDATE (12:20 p.m.): And here's the official game recap, courtesy of the New York Red Bull communications department.

Red Bulls Reserves Defeat D.C. United, 5-2

MONTCLAIR, NJ (Aug. 26, 2008) – A John Wolyniec hat trick propelled the New York Red Bulls Reserves past the D.C. United Reserves, 5-2, at Montclair State University Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Red Bulls moved to 2-4-0 (6 pts.) while United dropped to 4-4-1 (13 pts.) in the MLS Reserve League.

The hosts took the lead in the 33rd minute. Wolyniec was able to gather the ball on the right side of the penalty box off a United back pass and he took a touch before volleying it home for his second goal of the year in MLS Reserve League play.

Wolyniec was the provider on the Red Bulls’ second goal in the 44th minute. Matthew Mbuta squared the ball to Wolyniec, who found an on-rushing Borman on the left wing. Borman one-timed it past goalkeeper James Thorpe, off the right post and into the net.

United was able to pull one back moments later. Quavas Kirk was able to break a pair of tackles and guided it towards the far post, where Thabiso Khumalo was on hand to put it away.

Wolyniec scored his second of the match four minutes after the break. Mbuta found Sinisa Ubipairpovic open on the right wing and Ubiparipovic’s subsequent cross was bundled home by Wolyniec.

D.C. answered four minutes later. Khumalo was able to get behind the Red Bulls defense and fired a shot that goalkeeper Danny Cepero saved. However, Dwight Barnett was on hand to put it home from close range.

The Red Bulls were able to strike back with a pair of goals to put the game out of reach. Wolyniec completed his hat trick in the 54th minute when he put home a Danleigh Borman cross. Four minutes later, Chris Megaloudis hit a shot from 16 yards out past a diving Thorpe and just inside the right post.

The two reserve teams will face-off again on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 10 AM at RFK Stadium.

BTB_BYT_Burch160x600.gif

It's possible you've come across this page as a fan of D.C. United.  It's also possible that you got here via BrightestYoungThings.com (one of our favorites).  Regardless of how you got here, we've got a pretty cool deal for you that may find you in front of a camera with United players as part of an exclusive photo shoot.  Read on, friend.

A little background:  On Wednesday, September 3, United is playing in its first championship game since 2004 - the U.S. Open Cup final against the Charleston Battery.  It's big.  Real big.  United has a chance to add a record 12th trophy to its trophy case.  That's pretty good.

Full disclosure:  We want a ton of people at RFK Stadium that night to scare the pants off the Battery.

Because of that, we've got a special discounted ticket offer for you.  Here's how the ticket prices break down (Seating chart here>):

Mezzanine:  $40 each ($10 savings per ticket)
VIP:  $27 each ($8 savings)
Premium:  $22 each ($6 savings)
Spectator: $16 each ($4 savings)

The minimum order for this offer is four tickets, so grab a few friends and circle Wednesday the 3rd on your calendar.

Now, here's the kicker - every person that purchases tickets via this offer will be entered for a chance to participate in a super-sick, exclusive photo shoot with a couple United players.  Once we pick a winner, we'll figure out a date and time for the photo shoot to take place and you'll get an hour-long session with a BrightestYoungThings photographer.

So, how do you order?

Call our customer service reps between 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. during the week at 202-587-5467 (Caithlin) or 202-587-5466 (Kim) and tell them you want the BrightestYoungThings ticket offer.  They'll hook you up like there's no tomorrow - be sure to give them your email address, so we can contact you if you're chosen as the winner.  If you do win the photo shoot, we'll contact you soon thereafter the September 3 game and figure out the best time to make you a star.  Sound good?

PS - Be sure to get your order in before 5:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 2.

Fine print:  Or, if you don't want to purchase tickets to a really sweet soccer game - and because we have to align with the whole "no purchase neccesary to win thing," you can also be entered to win the photo shoot by sending us the following information: Name, address, phone number, email addresss, shoe size, favorite United player, favorite color and your favorite all-time band. Send it to the attention of Kyle Sheldon at this address. Keep in mind our contest rules, too.

... and you're female, today might be your lucky day.

United's starting centerback is obviously desperate to meet women and has made himself available to Mix 107.3 to take part in a little giveaway they've aptly named "The Bachelor."  The set-up is simple: Head over to the Mix 107.3 website and register for the opportunity to win not only a D.C. United prize pack and post-game meet & greet with Devon, but also a (hot!) date with #18.

Rest assured, Behind The Badge will have a full report of the date (disastrous or otherwise) next week.

UPDATE:  Devon will be on-air between 4:45-5:15 p.m. tomorrow!

Tony's Take: Seizing the Day

08/25/2008 9:30 AM by Tony Limarzi

062508_Limarzi.jpg

Prior to D.C. United’s victory over the Colorado Rapids I honestly predicted the final score to be, D.C. United 3 – Colorado 0.  Now, it’s true that I always predict that D.C. United will win 3-0, but for the first time since August 5th of last season I was correct.  I owe it all to Quavas Kirk.  It’s rare to enter a match as a substitute and score a goal with your first touch, but that was the case for Kirk on Saturday.  Here’s a player who wasn’t complaining about so many of United’s regulars being unavailable due to injury or suspension, he was happy to get a chance on the field with the first team.  Kirk was one of several players making the most of the opportunity to be on the field.

There were three goal scorers for D.C. against the Rapids- Joe Vide, Santino Quaranta, and Quavas Kirk.  If Tommy Soehn ever gets all of his players healthy this season (Gallardo, Olsen, Fred, Peralta, Mediate, Doe), it’s unclear if any of those players would start, and it’s almost impossible that those three would all be on the field at the same time.  The reality is that Tommy doesn’t have all of his players available, and in a long season loaded with extra tournaments, the contributions from players lower on the depth chart can make the difference between making or missing the playoffs, or between a home second leg or a road second leg in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, or between winning the Supporters’ Shield or coming in second or third.

The injuries have been accumulating slowly but consistently over the past months, and Kirk and Vide are the most recent players answering the call.  In July, Craig Thompson helped set up the Francis Doe’s equalizer in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal, as those two newly acquired players kept D.C. alive in that tournament; Ivan Guerrero collected a game-winning assist in his first appearance with United against Kansas City; and Ryan Cordeiro got an assist in the win against San Jose.  These players are not regular starters for D.C., but their contributions have been and will continue to be critical.

Some teams might lose players to injury and take the approach to not worry about results in their absence; basically try to cut their losses until the stars return.  Not so for United.  Even with the absences, the team is trying to gain ground in the race for the Supporters’ Shield.  If they fall short of that goal, they want to make sure that they are playing their best at the start of the MLS Cup Playoffs.  There are a lot of personnel questions that need to be addressed for Coach Soehn, but whether Vide and Kirk are in the lineup during the post season or not, they both made important plays to help United be in a better position when the playoffs do arrive.

MLS game #21: DCU 3 - Rapids 0

08/23/2008 10:48 PM by Kyle Sheldon

082308_Kirk_P.jpg

A 3-0 scoreline is pretty good, eh?  Some in the press box were calling it the most complete United game of the year and it's tough to disagree.  Three goals scored, a shutout and players working for their teammates all over the pitch.  Two absolute stunners from Joe Vide and Santino Quaranta and a opportunistic Quavas Kirk gets his first career regular season goal.  Guys were joking that Quavas subbed in from the sideline and ran straight towards goal for the rebound.  He subbed in during the 87th minute and scored in the 87th minute.  I'm checking with Elias Sports Bureau to see how many times that's happened before.  I can't imagine it's happened very often.

Update (11:44 p.m.):  Post-game quotes below and a few photos added to Video & Pics

D.C. UNITED HEAD COACH TOM SOEHN
On the game:
It took us a while to open them up. They started out with a 4-5-1 [formation]. We knew, watching the last game, we had an idea that that’s how they’d come out and it’s hard to play teams down so it took us a while to find our rhythm and flow. But I think once we opened them up, things started to open up and we created chances, not only in the run of play but also on set pieces, I thought. And the guys we injected in today showed some life. Obviously getting the stats now is important but the way they energized the game I thought they did a pretty good job today.

On the substitutes’ performance:
Well you always hope, through the course of the season, you hope that they’re in it long enough that they understand it’s just a piece within the organization or system. It’s taken a little bit longer than I’d like but we’ve had so much change, guys coming in and out hurt that it’s just tough to develop that. The guys are getting a little experience along the way, some of the young guys are understanding it. It’s still not consistent enough but we’re making some strides.

On Joe Vide pushing forward:
Between the two of them, as Joe [Vide] and Clyde [Simms] play together more, the understanding gets there and they know when to cover each other and now have they ability to read each other, and that comes by playing alongside each other. Inevitably, it works that way over time.

On Luciano Emilio’s two assists:
I think the game dictated that. [Colorado] was dropping everybody back in. It was hard to break them down so what ends up opening when teams drop are outside-the-box shots. He gave Joe [Vide] a great ball and Joe put himself in a good spot to get that. Credit Luci because he did what was needed.

On Louis Crayton:
He managed the box really well. The communication seems to be better and the one thing you can always rely on is that he has really good feet. He’s ready to bail out and give them the ball and he makes good decisions. So far he has adjusted well to the game here. He’s got a lot of experience so it’s easy for a guy with experience to get in situations like he’s in.

On Santino Quaranta’s goal:
Santino took a great shot. The one thing when Tino faces on against people, people have to be on it because you don’t know if he’s going to dribble or shoot because he’s capable of doing both very well. I’m real pleased for him because he’s battled through some injuries now and he’s battled through a lot of difficult things in his past and he continues to make strides and get better and better. We’re pleased for him and it was a great goal. It should be goal of the week.

D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER SANTINO QUARANTA
On his goal:
It was a good strike. I was kind of lucky I guess. It’s a good feeling, I really can’t describe it. It was special, it was a special goal for me because today is August 23 and it’s 10 months [of sobriety] for me since the day I went to California. It’s a special day all around. I was happy to be out there running around and really grateful, that’s the only way I can describe it. I know I’m doing the right thing. I know that good things happen and now I can see the rewards, it’s paying off - all the hard work. [The goal] was in the 80th minute and maybe I get taken off before because I’m not doing the extra work. To be able to score is always special, it’s a great feeling and even more special today.

On playing in different positions:
I’ll talk to Tommy [Soehn] and I do whatever I can to help the team win. That’s what I told him from day one, since I got here. I’m all about the team, whether it be up top, wherever. I just try to help the team win and that’s all I can do. That’s what I did today. That’s it.

D.C. UNITED GOALKEEPER LOUIS CRAYTON
On the game:
I’m very happy. It’s my first home game. We played together and that’s what we did at the game at New England so it’s a good thing to win, especially when you play collectively.

D.C. UNITED FORWARD QUAVAS KIRK
On his goal:

[Bryan] Namoff just had a great header and the keeper put the ball on the ground and it just popped back up and I just ran onto it. It was a wide open net so if I had missed that I would have just put my head down and walked off the field. It was a first, I’ve never done that before. It definitely felt good to get a goal. [It was my first career goal] in the regular season so it definitely felt good. Feels real good.

On the many injuries:
We definitely got some bad injuries. We lost Fred last game and that’s a big blow to us but the younger guys, some of us are coming up through the ranks, showing our stuff out there so it’s a good opportunity for all the guys that came out today and all the guys that did come out played well.

D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER JOE VIDE
On his goal:
Once I kind of made a move, I just called for it and played a good ball in. I’m always expecting it because you never know if you’re going to get it so you have to be in the right place at the right time.

082308_Vide_P.jpg

On whether there is more pressure on him because of injuries:
Not really. I have a certain role anyway. This goal is kind of one off, it’s not really happening much. If it happens, it happens. I kind of sit in, try to win balls, bring some energy. I try to do my job and try to make things easier on the other guys around me, whether they need me to step up. Today I thought I played well. If it’s just winning balls and not doing much attacking-wise [I can do that]. But there’s no real pressure. It’s nice when we’re at home and we’re expected to win. We want to be a team that makes it to the playoffs.

COLORADO RAPIDS HEAD COACH GARY SMITH
On the game:
We tried to have some confidence and start building relationships among the guys. During the first period we felt quite comfortable, even though we weren’t winning.

COLORADO RAPIDS DEFENDER MIKE PETKE
On the game:
The first goal, going on the 44th minute, I’m saying to myself, I feel comfortable with the back line. We’re shutting them down great and then they get that goal. That just slows you down. You come out a little inexperienced. We’ve got a lot of experience on the team but we acted very inexperienced to start the second half. We were going in the first minute like we had ten seconds left to get that tying goal and I think that killed us. It opened up the counterattack a lot for them. They took advantage of their finishes. Santino [Quaranta] had an unbelievable finish. [Preston] Burpo had a great save in the third one or second one. I don’t think the 3-0 justifies the score but I’m not saying they shouldn’t have won the game tonight at all.

On the team’s performance:
We have some offensive players in Conor Casey, Colin Clark, Christian Gomez. I just think it was a bit unlucky. And you know, [they have] outstanding goalkeeping. You look at the offensive side too, it’s only my second game but even before I got here, teams would get three or four shots and they’d score on two. It’s just a bit unlucky and maybe on times, there are a few shots we give up that we’re not tight enough.

COLORADO RAPIDS FORWARD CONOR CASEY
On the game:
We just got outplayed, period. There’s no getting around it. After we went down 1-0 we tried to press a little bit but nothing came of chances.

DCU vs. Colorado: Starting lineups [Benny!]

08/23/2008 6:29 PM by Kyle Sheldon

The big news out of the locker room this evening is that Ben Olsen has been named to the 18-man roster for tonight's game.  Benny has been training for the last week and a half and is attempting to salvage the season after numerous ankle surgeries over the last nine months.  His lone appearance of the season came on June 29, when United beat LA 4-1 and Ben came on as a 75th minute substitute.  The pain in his ankles during that game was strong enough that he had athroscopic sugery a week later, which included putting two screws in.  The fiery midfielder will not start tonight but is one of seven substitutes available for selection should Tom Soehn decide to use him.

Here's tonight's starters:  Louis Crayton; Bryan Namoff, Devon McTavish, Gonzalo Martinez; Craig Thompson, Clyde Simms, Joe Vide, Santino Quaranta, Ivan Guerrero; Luciano Emilio, Jaime Moreno.

Here's how they'll line-up in the 3-5-2:

------------Emilio---------------Moreno--------------
---------------------Quaranta--------------------------
Guerrero----------------------------------Thompson
-----------------Vide------------Simms----------------
------------------------------------------------------------
Martinez-----------McTavish--------------Namoff
------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------Crayton--------------------------

MLS game #21: DCU vs. Colorado Rapids

08/23/2008 9:35 AM by Kyle Sheldon

After playing three of the last four games on the road, United returns to RFK Stadium tonight for the first of three straight home games (including September 3rd's U.S. Open Cup final) as the Colorado Rapids visit the District.  United has played its best soccer at home, putting together a record of 7-3 at RFK, outscoring opponents 25-13.

Tonight's game will see former United players Christian Gomez and Facundo Erpen make their first appearance back since being traded last year.  Colorado is also the home of Mike Petke, who played with United from 2003 to 2005, so there will be a lot familiar faces on the field tonight.

Tonight's game will not be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet, so get yourself out to 2400 East Capitol St. SE.  If you can't make it, there is expanded radio coverage tonight.  You can listen to Tony Limarzi's call of the game on 820 AM, 1500 AM and 107.7 FM (and in Spanish on 1540 AM).  Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. (not Mountain Time).

Here's what folks are writing in advance of tonight's contest:

Comcast SportsNet was out yesterday to talk to some of the guys - here's an excerpt with comments from Devon McTavish and Clyde Simms on the return of Christian Gomez.

Finally, how about some predictions?

Merchandise: Ilana Wolf collection

082208_womensgear_P.jpg

Periodically, we'll post new merchandise items that are available in the United Team Store (located at RFK Stadium's Main Gate).

We just got word from our merch guys that the new Ilana Wolf collection of women's accessory bags is now available.  There's a tote bag ($32), clutch ($20) and wristlet ($18).  I wouldn't know what those were just by reading them, so there's a picture to your right to help.

Man, those bags are nice.  If I had a girlfriend, I'd probably buy one for her. Maybe one of each.  If only I had a girlfriend.  It got weird, didn't it?

The Team Store is open 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, and four hours prior to kickoff every day the team has a game.

MLS game #20: DCU 1 - Revolution 2

082008_Moreno_P.jpg

UPDATE (10/21 - 9:14 a.m.):  I've added a few photos to the Video & Pics page.

Shoot

The team departs early tomorrow morning to head back to the District and will turn focus towards the visiting Colorado Rapids on Saturday.  The guys were - not surprisingly - disappointed with the result tonight.  A number of players commented on what they thought was a poorly officiated match - it certainly looked like Fred got pulled down in the box in the second half - but most thought the team could have played better.

Post-game quotes below.  I'll add a few photos tomorrow (maybe).

D.C. UNITED HEAD COACH TOM SOEHN
“I don’t think in the first half we executed what we came to do very well. In the second half I think it got better; we moved the ball around better. We were disappointed in the no call on Fred in the box. I can’t wait to look at it again, but from my memory it was 100 percent a PK, and that’s a very crucial time to get one back and make it 1-1. We had our chances, so it’s disappointing. I felt like we could have snuck out with a tie.”

“When you go down one, it’s disappointing, but I don’t think we created a whole lot either, so on that side I was disappointed. We talked and reorganized the second half and I thought we had a lot of good play and some good quality chances.”

D.C. UNITED DEFENDER MARC BURCH
On the first goal
“I couldn’t see it until the last second, and it came through Devon (McTavish)’s legs. I went to kick it and (Adam) Cristman got it and I just couldn’t get enough on it and it just went right off Taylor (Twellman). Give them some credit, they hustled and were in the right spot; it was just bad luck on our part.”

D.C. UNITED FORWARD JAIME MORENO
“We always say that when the defense drops too much on the forwards, its always trouble for us. In the second half when we started playing and pressing, putting more pressure higher, it made a big difference in the game. We put in a better performance in the second half, but still it wasn’t good enough. That’s another lesson and hopefully it won’t happen again.”

On the first half
“(The Revolution) did a pretty good job keeping the ball and winning second balls. We had a big gap in the middle, but we sorted it out in the second half and it made a big difference. It was a bad loss, but now we just have to think about Saturday.”

“We never gave up. We kept digging, kept trying, and after we scored the first goal, we had some good chances to tie the game. It’s just part of the game where you get chances and you miss them. We just have to do a better job overall. It wasn’t a good job in the first half, but we showed a different team in the second half. We’ll learn from it and it won’t happen again.”

REVOLUTION HEAD COACH STEVE NICOL
“(Doug Warren) looked confident. He had a couple of things he had to make decisions about and when he had to make decisions, he made the right one, which is half the battle with goalkeepers. It is great they can make fantastic saves, but if they can make good decisions on a regular basis, it makes it look easier than it actually is.”

“The first half we felt safe to be ahead. We would have liked to have penetrated them a bit more, but as far as playing the game was concerned, we were in control. We were in control up until the 60th minute and then we lost our way a little bit and they put us under pressure. We lost a goal from our own bad play, we should have just stopped the ball up the other end of the field and cleared it and we didn’t. We tried to be too clever in the wrong area, lost the ball and then Jaime (Moreno) scored a great goal. If that falls to anybody else it is not a goal - it was a fantastic goal from him. It was difficult after that, all of a sudden they’re one goal in it. You’re stuck between going forward too early and back too far and that is what happened after they scored.”

“(Khano Smith) has been – over the past two or three games – he has been lively, he has been enthusiastic. The one thing that we tend to forget is players coming from outside the USA don’t understand the whole travel part of the game and (Mauricio) Castro has been just feeling his legs. He is used to getting on a bus and going an hour and playing another team. He is not used to time zones and flights and buses to stadiums to get to the airport and all kinds of things. Castro was feeling his legs a little bit but as I said Khano Smith has been energetic and confident and that is why we’re playing him.”

“(Michael Parkhurst) has been saying he hasn’t gotten a lot of sleep but he has experience behind him now. He has a fantastic soccer brain and no surprise that he came through.”

“(Taylor Twellman) just needs games. He really just needs to get games under his belt to get his real sharpness. He is fit, he can run all day, but that extra sharpness you get from playing games is what he is missing.”

“Adam (Cristman) has been an absolute trooper, he has made a huge contribution the last four or five weeks. Good strikers are always active anyway and the two of them are good strikers. They’re both good at holding the ball up and they can both score goals, may it continue.”

“We have so many games at the present time that we’re counting the suspensions and the bruises and the injuries as we go along. Clearly when you’re getting somebody back like Taylor Twellman it can only add to your strength, particularly up front and as a unit. It is good to get him back but as I said we don’t look too far ahead at the present time.

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION GOALKEEPER DOUG WARREN
On his mindset of today’s game after the San Jose Game
“To me that game was already gone, you couldn’t get it back. That’s a difficult situation to come in at. I was just focusing on this game - this was my game from the start. The guys in front of me played unbelievable - (Michael Parkhurst), (Jay) Heaps and Chris (Albright) - and just our defending six back there played unbelievable, which made it a lot easier on me.”

Having Michael Parkhurst and Shalrie Joseph for the game
“The guys that stepped in there - Jeff (Larentowicz) and those guys - they did a great job. We won SuperLiga without them. Again, (Michael Parkhurst) is the best defender in the league and having him back there is a big relief.”

DCU @ Revolution: Starting lineups

08/20/2008 6:37 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Head Coach Tom Soehn continues to have to deal with player injuries and absences heading into tonight's match with the Revolution.  Ivan Guerrero is with the Honduran National Team for their World Cup qualifier in Mexico this evening, while Gonzalo Martinez is serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation.  Marcelo Gallardo, Gonzalo Peralta, Francis Doe, Ben Olsen, Domenic Mediate and now Zach Wells are all out with injuries.

With that in mind, here is the starting lineup for tonight's game:

Louis Crayton; Bryan Namoff, Devon McTavish, Marc Burch, Mike Zaher; Fred, Clyde Simms, Joe Vide, Santino Quaranta; Luciano Emilio, Jaime Moreno.

And this is how they'll line-up:

--------Emilio------Moreno-------
----------------------------------------
Quaranta---------------------Fred
---------------------------------------
---------Vide-------Simms--------
----------------------------------------
Zaher----------------------Namoff
-------Burch----McTavish--------
----------------------------------------
---------------Crayton--------------

Subs:  James Thorpe, Quavas Kirk, Craig Thompson, Pat Carroll, Ryan Cordeiro.

Of note, Mike Zaher is making his League debut and his first start for United.  He did, however, play in last week's 3-1 win over the Revs in the U.S. Open Cup, coming on as an 88th minute sub.

Kickoff is just around the corner

MLS game #20: DCU @ New England Revolution

08/20/2008 9:14 AM by Kyle Sheldon

Two big games in five days.  Against two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.  Both of whom are ahead of United in the table.

After a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire on Saturday, United looks toward big game number two this evening against the second place Revolution.  Last week, the guys topped a Revolution team made up almost entirely of reserves 3-1 in the U.S. Open Cup semifinal.  They can likely look forward to a full strength side this evening, as both teams battle for important points.

Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast locally on Comcast SportsNet and can be heard on the radio - in English on 1050 AM and in Spanish on 1540 AM.

Let's take a look at what's floating around the interwebs this morning:

Now, that you've got all of the newest news, how about making a prediction for tonight's match?  Here's how it work:  You predict the score (DCU 32 - New England 0) and if you guess correctly, you might very well win two tickets to an upcoming United game.  All it takes is a minute of your time.  Congrats, by the way, to 'jonk' who won two tickets after correctly predicting United would top the Revs last week 3-1 (yes, he was one of a few, but he was the one randomly selected, so you settle down).

Santino on Washington Post Live

08/18/2008 10:56 AM by Kyle Sheldon

Happy Monday, sports fans.  Just a quick note to let you know that our very own Santino Quaranta will be on Washington Post Live this evening to chat about all things United.  As you know, the show airs on Comcast SportsNet each weekday evening from 5-6:30 p.m. with host Russ Thaler.

Have a question for Mr. Quaranta?  Drop it in the comments below and we'll pass them along to Comcast prior to the show.

UPDATE:  We're not purposefully trying to mislead you, but the interview is actually going to air tomorrow.  So, feel free to tune in tonight, but Tino will be on  the show tomorrow.  We'll still take your questions, though!

Photo essay: United cheers Phelps to victory

08/17/2008 10:34 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Following Saturday night's 1-0 win over the Fire, the team gathered in the locker room around the lone TV to watch US swimmer Michael Phelps and his team compete in the final swim of the Olympic meet - the 400 medley relay.  As you probably know, Phelps was going for his record eighth gold medal.  What follows is a photo essay of the team's reaction during the last two legs of the swim.  Despite the fact that the team was represented by a Bolivian, a Liberian, a Colombian, a Honduran and two Brazilians - among several Americans - the squad was fully behind the history-making Phelps.

Santino Quaranta was especially pulling for Phelps, as both hail from Baltimore ("they know how to grow those elite athletes," said Quaranta on more than one occasion during the meet).

1) The team gathers as the race is underway...

081608_DCU_Phelps_1.jpg2) Quaranta (hand raised) was the most interested and involved (by far) as Phelps' leg began..

081608_DCU_Phelps_2.jpg3) Phelps comes around the turn and the team rises to its feet, urging the U.S. forward (though there were some random calls of "Go Liberia" despite the fact that they weren't competing)...

081608_DCU_Phelps_3.jpg

4) Santino can't believe what he's seeing (Joe Vide, far left, may or may not be playing air guitar)...

081608_DCU_Phelps_4.jpg

5) More excitement as Jason Lezak begins the final leg...

081608_DCU_Phelps_5.jpg

6)  The final 50 meters and everyone is on their feet... Santino in prime viewing form...Joe Vide preparing his double fist pump in the event of victory... Bryan Namoff was thirsty...  Jaime Moreno moving closer to the TV...

081608_DCU_Phelps_6.jpg

7)  The part where Jaime pretended to turn off the TV to loud exclamations of "No!" and "No one likes Bolivia!" and "Better luck in the winter games, Bolivian" and other things.

081608_DCU_Phelps_7.jpg

8) The anticipation is too much as they come down the stretch... even the Liberian (second from right) is enthralled.  Kind of.

081608_DCU_Phelps_8.jpg

9)  Celebration begins as the U.S. wins.  Numerous fist pumps, chest bumps and celebratory high fives are thrown around as if they're going out of style (they aren't).

081608_DCU_Phelps_9.jpg

10)  Devon McTavish (far left) comes out of nowhere with a double-fisted, finger-pointing celebration.  Santino is the happiest man alive (aside from Phelps).  Mike Zaher (center) texts his mom the good news (we can only assume).

081608_DCU_Phelps_10.jpg

It was quite the evening - United wins, the U.S. and Phelps wins and everyone (who likes either United or the United States of America) is happy.  Santino sums it as only Santino can:  "Baltimore wins again."

No one is sure what he means.

Video: Fred's goal

08/17/2008 1:31 AM by Kyle Sheldon

For those of you who didn't watch the game tonight, you'll have to take my word for it - Fred was absolutely dicing Fire players on the flank tonight. He made several players look plain silly with his quick, slick, sick moves.  He also scored his second goal of the year.  Here it is.

MLS game #19: DCU 1 - Chicago Fire 0

08/17/2008 12:52 AM by Kyle Sheldon

The guys earned a solid, grind it out win in Chicago tonight, topping the Fire 1-0 on the strength of Fred's 27th minute goal.  In his debut, goalkeeper Louis Crayton made two saves to preserve the shutout - United's second of the year.  Coupled with the win in Chicago on June 7, it is the first time in club history that United has taken six points from the Fire on the road in a single season (the two teams have played twice in Chicago in five different seasons, not including the current one).

With the win and a loss by Kansas City (New York plays Chicago tomorrow), United takes sole possession of fourth place with 28 points.

We'll be up early tomorrow to head back to D.C. as the team now looks towards a Wednesday night road match versus the New England Revolution.

I don't yet have post-game quotes from the Fire, but we'll add them as soon as possible on Sunday.

DCU @ Chicago: Lineups

MLS game #19: DCU @ Chicago Fire

08/16/2008 12:54 PM by Digital Media Dept.

The last time United visited Chicago, the team got a thrilling, last-minute win courtesy of a Luciano Emilio goal.  I'd take a similar result this evening - you know, a win - but would prefer a little less drama.  The team watched some film last night in preparation and will need to be ready for U.S. international Brian McBride, who may make his Fire debut tonight.

Game time is 8:30 p.m. ET.  Tonight's match will not be broadcast locally, but can be heard on the radio - in English on 1050 AM and in Spanish on 1540 AM.  If you're looking for a place to watch the game with fellow United fans, here are a few options

As you're thinking about tonight's match there is a whole lot to read out there on the interwebs.  Here's a sampling:

  • In the Washington Post, Steve Goff takes a look at the long-standing United-Fire rivalry
  • John Haydon in the Washington Times, writes about Santino Quaranta's move to the middle of the park.
  • From the mothership, Charlie Boehm previews tonight's match
  • In the Chicago Tribune, Luis Arroyave writes about Brian McBride finally joining the Fire.
  • Orrin Schwarz in the Daily Herald also writes about McBride's possible debut
  • Strangely, Nick Firchau writes about this guy McBride, too.

 Predictions, anyone?

Video: Introducing Louis Crayton

08/15/2008 6:17 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Though he has been in D.C. for the last week, we finally announced today the acquisition of goalkeeper Louis Crayton.  The Liberian spent the last 11 years playing in the Swiss league and also has extensive international experience.  You can read all about his playing career in the press release we put out today.

Louis has traveled with the team to Chicago and will be on the 18-man roster tomorrow.  We grabbed Louis yesterday for a quick get-to-know-you interview.  And here it is:

Open Cup final tickets now on sale!

08/14/2008 4:40 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Tickets for D.C. United's huge game versus the Charleston Battery in the U.S. Open Cup final are now on sale.  The game is set for Wednesday, September 3, at RFK Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET).

I'm not sure about you, but I'd really like to see the team lift a championship trophy.  I joined the team early in 2005, so I narrowly missed celebrating the 2004 MLS Cup.  Yes, I've seen a couple of Supporters' Shield trophies - and those are a great testament to the solid teams we've had the last two years - but, I badly want to see a championship win.  This is a great opportunity to add our 12th major trophy to the most crowded trophy case in Major League Soccer.  Let's get another, eh?

Tell your friends.  Get to RFK Stadium on September 3.  We want the Battery to be shaking in their boots when they take the field.

And now, a ton of post-game comments following last night's win over the Revolution and some additional highlights from the game (and really, I don't get sick of watching our goals).  A ton of other video can be found on our YouTubes page

Did we mention we'll be hosting the Charleston Battery in the Open Cup final on Wednesday, September 3?

Below is a quick YouTubers we put together of the goals from tonight's win over the Revolution.  We'll have a full Access United with post-game player quotes tomorrow, but being that there wasn't any TV broadcast tonight, we thought you might appreciate seeing this footage as soon as possible...  Two great goals from last year's League MVP and a pretty finish from this year's top candidate for Comeback Player of the Year.

U.S. Open Cup semis: DCU 3 - Revolution 1

08/12/2008 9:22 PM by Kyle Sheldon

081208_Emilio_USOC_P.jpg

United wins 3-1 and is on to the U.S. Open Cup final where they'll play.... well, we don't know that yet.  The other semifinal between the Seattle Sounders and Charleston Battery is currently in overtime following a 1-1 finish after 90 minutes.  Should Charleston win, United will host the Battery at RFK Stadium, while a Seattle victory would mean a trip to the Pacific Northwest for the Black-and-Red.  Regardless of host, the final will take place on Wednesday, September 3, and United will look to add its 12th trophy in club history.

Three great goals tonight for United - Emilio in the 4th, Quaranta in the 48th and Emilio with his second in the 81st.

We'll be back in a bit with additional post-game photos (I've already added two here) and quotes.

UPDATE: Charleston wins 4-3 on penalties and will head to RFK Stadium on September 3 for the U.S. Open Cup final.  It will be United's first appearance in the Open Cup final since 1997 and its first appearance in a championship final since MLS Cup in 2004.  Tickets for the game will be on sale on Thursday at 10:30 a.m., so get ready to pack RFK as the team goes for another trophy!

UPDATE #2:  Post-game quotes below and a couple more pictures on the Video & Pics page.

D.C. UNITED HEAD COACH TOM SOEHN
On his feelings about the game:
First half not good feelings and second half [it was] much better. [There is] still a lot of room to improve. We came out and we [had] talked about possessing the ball and the only possession we had was in the negative aspect, in the back where if you take too many chances back there you’re going to pay for some mistakes. On the goal we scored first, it was a play we talked about – the backs overlapping – and [Bryan] Namoff put a good ball in. But the first half was disappointing. We addressed a lot of things and I thought in the second half we started to do the things that we wanted to do right from the get go.

On whether the strategy was to get the first goal:
I’m sure it went through our guys’ minds. We tried to not have that be a factor. I think we talked more about rectifying how poor we played on Sunday. That was our motivation.

On looking forward to the final:
Today we’ve got a lot of guys getting back. We showed rust. We didn’t show the quality that we do when we’re in top shape of knocking the ball around, exposing space. We found that a little bit more as the game wore on.

On his first final as a head coach:
You take satisfaction when you win finals. We still have to play that game.

On New England’s goal:
I thought we could have closed it a lot quicker. It was a throw in and I thought we just thought it wasn’t going to be an issue when we took that play on and you can’t do that, no matter what game’s on there.

On Gonzalo Peralta:
I thought Peralta was pretty doggone good today for his first game back after hernia surgery. He was really vocal, physically he dominated back there. It was good to get him back.

On Ivan Guerrero:
He works endlessly. I think he got a little tired today but who wouldn’t with all the work he’s done the last two games.

D.C. UNITED FORWARD LUCIANO EMILIO
On the win:
I think for us it’s very motivational. If we win the final it’s great motivation for the rest of the season of MLS.

On whether he was surprised at New England’s lineup:
Yeah I am surprised. I knew before the game but we concentrated on the game because we didn’t want any surprises in this game. I think it’s ok. We played with a lot of concentration and then we won 3-1. I think that’s good for us.

D.C. UNITED GOALKEEPER ZACH WELLS
On United’s play:
The patience on the ball was good. I thought we were patient and it opened up a lot of opportunities in their half of the field.

On players returning from injury:
It’s good to have [Gonzalo] Peralta back. He’s a physical presence. He bodied up [Adam] Cristman all night. I thought he did a good job getting around Shalrie [Joseph] early and getting some kicks in so then it’s just a matter of our attacking players really doing their jobs.

On frustration in the back line after New England’s goal:
It was a pretty weak cross on the ground coming across and it needs to get cleared first time. It wasn’t cleared cleanly and we gave them a second chance and the guy buried it.

On what he said to the back line:
I just said we have to change the plan of attack. We have to be a little more confident on the ball. I thought our shape was good in the first and second half so it’s just a matter of a little more composure with the ball.

D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER SANTINO QUARANTA
On communication with Jaime Moreno:
I’ve been playing with Jaime for a little bit now and I understand the sky’s the limit when he has the ball so he always tells me he’ll think for me if I just run so that’s what I did.

On being able to finish and get a goal:
I was out for a couple of weeks and you have to catch up mentally, that’s the biggest thing, and making decisions at the right time. I rushed a couple in the first half and I thought in the second half I slowed the game down a little bit. I started thinking and relaxing a little bit. It seemed to work out. I just worked hard.

On advancing to the final:
This is a prestigious tournament. Any time you get a chance to win a trophy for D.C. United, we pride ourselves on that. We’re excited about the opportunity to win this tournament and it’s a big win for us.

On whether he was surprised at New England’s lineup:
A little bit. But like I said before the game it’s not a matter of who they have out there. We have to stay focused and that can cause a problem in your own team when you don’t see their first XI and for us we just have to look past that and say we have to do the job here. They were organized and they were smart in that aspect but we broke them down a little bit and it worked out.

D.C. UNITED DEFENDER GONZALO MARTINEZ [VIA TRANSLATION]
On the game:
It was a difficult game for us. It doesn’t matter who’s in front of you, you still have 11 against 11, so for us it was a good win, and a confident booster for our next MLS game.

On the chemistry with Iván Guerrero:
I think we played well together, he’s an experienced player, he’s a national team player, so we talked about it in the locker room before going out, so it wasn’t very difficult to know whether he went up and I stayed, or he stayed. It was pretty easy.

On the defense’s mistakes:
I think that there’s always going to be some times when you commit errors, you can blame that to different things, sometimes you get tired, new players in the line-up, injuries, but I thought we played well tonight, specially Peralta, who just came back from an injury. The back line played very good today. We just need to keep working hard to improve, but overall I think you’re always going to commit errors, you know, when you have a shutout is part of the game.

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION MIDFIELDER JOE GERMANESE
On the team’s performance:
It doesn’t really matter who we have out there we’re going out there to win. So D.C. United here at D.C. United, there’s obviously a lot of history between the teams. It’s the Open Cup semifinals and we’re the defending Open Cup champs. We come here and we want to win. It was a tough game. Obviously a little bit of a hostile environment but it should have been better on our part, regardless of who we have out there.

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION FORWARD ADAM CRISTMAN
On the team’s performance:
Their second goal, it didn’t necessarily knock us out but it makes it harder. We had already come back from one, it’s harder to come back from the second. Then the red card was just unfortunate, that second yellow shouldn’t have happened. [There was] a little inconsistency, in my opinion. Like I said before we got whacked exactly like that all game long, including a direct elbow to the face, and not even so much as a card.  So to give a second yellow you have to think he’s got to be a little bit more in tune.

U.S. Open Cup semis: DCU vs. New England

08/12/2008 9:09 AM by Kyle Sheldon

After a disappointing loss Sunday night in New Jersey, the guys are looking forward to tonight's important match with the New England Revolution.  Tonight's game at RFK Stadium kicks off at 7:30 p.m. (ET) and it is not being televised - so get yourself to the stadium!  If you absolutely can't make it, it will be available on the radio in both English (1050 AM) and Spanish (1540 AM) and streaming live on dcunited.com

With a win tonight, United would face the winner of Seattle Sounders-Charleston Battery, which is set for 7:30 p.m. at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC (apparently, you can watch live on USLlive.com).

Lots to read out there in advance of tonight's game - here are a few selections:

  • Steve Goff in the Washington Post on the team's short turnaround after New York.
  • In the Washington Times, John Haydon on the team having little time to dwell on Sunday's loss.
  • From dcunited.com, a few notes on tonight's matchup.
  • On UnitedMania.com, a thorough look at tonight's game.
  • In Boston, Monique Walker writes about the the Revolution's packed schedule for the Boston Globe.
  • Rich Thompson at the Boston Herald says we should expect backup Doug Warren in goal tonight.
  • The Capital Weather Gang has your weather updates throughout the day (it's looking great!).

So, that's that.  Did I miss anything?

Put your predictions in the comments section and you could win two tickets to an upcoming United game.  And get yourself out to RFK tonight!

Branden Steineckert is a United fan

08/11/2008 6:22 PM by Kyle Sheldon

081108_Rancid_1.jpgI have a feeling a good number of our fans - perhaps especially those in Barra Brava? - know who Branden Steineckert is.  For those of you that don't, you should know first that he is a United fan.  He also happens to play drums in one of the most popular punk rock bands out there, Rancid.  He also previously played in The Used, which is a massive rock band as well.

It just so happens that Rancid is in D.C. tonight for a sold out show at the 9:30 Club and Branden made his way to RFK Stadium today to pick up some United gear at the team store.  He bought a couple shirts and also took advantage of the Behind The Badge merchandise offer and got the team duffle bag.

Branden told us he is a friend of former United goalkeeper Nick Rimando and apparently lives in Salt Lake (I can neither confirm nor deny that he owns any RSL gear, though).  We didn't think to ask him if he'd be wearing any gear at the show tonight, but if anyone is going please be sure to let us know how it went in the comments section.

UPDATE (11:54 p.m.):  I've not yet seen photos from tonight's show, but I just got a text from Nick Rimando and he said: "go and find pics from the Rancid show tonight... Branden will be showing his true colors."  I'm pretty sure that can only mean one thing and I have a feeling it might be that he wore a kit with the number 18 on the back.  Clever move, Rimando, clever move.

Two weeks in a row?

08/11/2008 1:38 PM by Kyle Sheldon

One of the only positive things to come out of last night's match was Jaime Moreno's 120th career goal.  Remember after last week's goal when Jaime said he couldn't remember the last time he had scored with his head?  Well, he did it again last night and his tally is up for the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week.  The competition is tough this week, so Jaime needs your vote

Insult to injury

08/11/2008 11:32 AM by Doug Hicks

Given the result of last night's game, being in the post-game locker room was no picnic.  Moods deteriorated even more on the bus ride home, courtesy of a six-hour trip that saw the Black-and-Red arrive at RFK Stadium after 2:00 a.m. this morning. The team was given a bit of extra time to sleep this morning before reporting to training for recovery/pre-game preparations.

It seems that the culprit of the traffic jam was Mother Nature.  A storm in southern New Jersey felled a tree across a portion of the southbound New Jersey Turnpike.  A 10-mile back-up formed, leaving motorists stuck in a two-hour delay.

In addition to scoring United's lone goal of the game, Jaime Moreno proved to be the most fortunate member of the group.  Choosing to drive home with his family from Giants Stadium, the League's career goal scoring leader avoided much of the delay by phoning a friend to stay the night on the road and finish the drive this morning.

MLS game #18: DCU 1 - NYRB 4

08/10/2008 8:33 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Ugh

Post-game quotes in a bit.

UPDATE:  Apologies, but there's a lot of post-game quotes here from New York and only a couple for us.  That's what happens when you're on the road.  Nothing else from me on this game - let's just start looking towards Tuesday's game with New England.

D.C. UNITED HEAD COACH TOM SOEHN
On the game:
“I thought we came out with some energy and we were knocking the ball around well up until the point where we scored. We kind of let the foot off the gas a little bit and I thought we started to give them a little life.  Two soft goals really cost us.  Giving away a free kick right out the box and then the second one was just a cluster of errors.  It’s hard to come back from that and I think we put our heads down.  We tried to get going again in the second half but I still don’t think we had the life we needed and the competitiveness. “

On whether the short week was a factor:
“I don’t know.  This was an important game.  It’s against a rival and it’s a league game.  There were no excuses looking past this one.”

On substituting Jaime Moreno at halftime:
“Jaime’s back was hurting, it was hard on him.  Unfortunately, we were chasing the game down so we wanted to match a couple of guys and unfortunately it didn’t work that way.  We had to try to get back into the game.”

D.C. UNITED DEFENDER PAT CARROLL
On Juan Pablo Angel’s second goal:
“It was going straight towards the far end.  I thought I had it with my head, but I went up for it and didn’t get it and it went in.  There’s not really much you can do about it, it just kind of happens.”

On whether fatigue was a factor in the game:
“I honestly couldn’t tell you.  We were playing our game, we were getting into tackles, running balls, but we kind of just faded out.”

NEW YORK RED BULLS HEAD COACH JUAN CARLOS OSORIO
On the team’s effort:
“I think that we got what we deserved.  All the guys today showed great commitment and they executed and carried out the way we planned the game.”

On falling behind early:
“I think for me personally, the best thing was that after we conceded their first shot on goal, I thought the guys reacted very well to equalize the game and then end up at halftime up 2-1.  That was very good to see that.  Prior to this game, every time we went down one-to-nil, we didn’t come out on top.”

On Gabriel Cichero’s impact:
“We said that we wanted someone that could organize the back.  He did that, and also showed some very good distribution, which we have been lacking in the past, so I think he was very committed and good on the ball.  I have to say that it was too early to get a yellow card, but it showed his willingness to compete.”

On what his team showed:
“It was even more valuable for the morale.  The way the game turned out to be was that it was more important to come back from the one-nil deficit.  The game showed we are very resilient and that we have a lot of character because everyone competed and fought hard.”

On the importance of this game:
“I thought it was very important.  I stated before the game that it was important points-wise, but that team morale was very important, that we believe in the way that we are playing.  It was huge that the team responded very well today.  I can’t just go and praise anyone individually, because it was a great team effort.  In the end, we have to build on this and hopefully we can repeat the same performance on Sunday and we will see what the outcome will be, but we will build off this.”

NEW YORK RED BULLS MIDFIELDER MIKE MAGEE
On the game:
“We marked this game on the calendar. We felt good, we had a good week of training, to get back home, we haven’t had a lot of results go our way in the last five games. I don’t think we’ve won. We knew it was an important game. Everyone was healthy. Everyone was fit. We knew today that we were going to have a good result.”

On his performance:
“I feel like my legs are getting healthy and my legs are more fit. The team as a whole, I can’t say too much for myself. obviously it feels good to get a goal, but just to have the team come together like we did today is a good enough feeling as it is.”

NEW YORK RED BULLS DEFENDER GABRIEL CICHERO
On his first regular-season game:
“The most important thing for the team, and for me, is that we won. They say that (D.C.) is very good on offense and I think the most important thing is that we are more confident after winning this game. I think that we showed some good football.”

On the defense:
“I thought I played well. I tried to organize the defense, speaking a lot. I think the team needed this. I felt good. After playing the football we played, I think we can play with any team. We played on the ground, to Juan Pablo (Angel) and to Jorge (Rojas). They can make a difference. Every time we went inside, we scored.”

NEW YORK RED BULLS FORWARD JUAN PABLO ANGEL
On the result:
“I think it was important to get a result today first of all. We couldn’t get a grip of the game at the beginning in the first 15 minutes … Then they scored a goal. That wasn’t the best case scenario for us. We didn’t want to concede a goal early. But it happened. Then we showed (something) that we haven’t showed earlier in the year. We showed character and resilience. We won a very difficult game against a decent side.”

On the upcoming playoff push:
“It was a must-win game because of the circumstances. We have to put ourselves in a playoff position and today was very important. I said that today was the most important game because it was the next one, now the (most important game) is against Toronto. And if we show the character we showed today, I think we have a decent chance of getting the results from now (on).”

DCU @ NYRB starting lineup

08/10/2008 3:54 PM by Doug Hicks

"Unleash the power within."  That's the symposium being given in the conference center of the team hotel in New Jersey by master motivational speaker Anthony Robbins.  Though I remember him better for his stellar role in Shallow Hal, let's hope the general theme of his speaking engagement makes its way into the team thought process for tonight's match.

With that in mind, Tommy Soehn will send to the field the same line-up that began United's 2-0 victory over Kansas City last weekend.  Zach Wells, Bryan Namoff, Devon McTavish, Pat Carroll, Marc Burch, Fred, Clyde Simms, Joe Vide, Ivan Guerrero, Jaime Moreno and Luciano Emilio are set to go.  Are you?

MLS Game #18: DCU @ NYRB

08/10/2008 8:07 AM by Doug Hicks

If you're like me, you've already started a big day of watching sports.  The US Men's Olympic Soccer Team is underway and a full slate of Olympic Games and the PGA Championships lies ahead.  Our day ends with D.C. United.

United has trophies on their mind.  Before turning their attention to the Dewar Cup, when the Black-and-Red host New England in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup (buy some tickets!), the boys are in New York tonight with hopes of securing the Atlantic Cup by taking the season series over the Red Bulls.  The game is to be shown live on Comcast SportsNet and aired on WFED and the United Spanish Radio Network.  The game kicks off at 5:00 p.m.  Tune in!

To be properly prepared, here's some prep reading for commercials throughout the day:

Access United: U.S. Open Cup preview

Do you fully understand the importance of next week's semifinal game against the New England Revolution in the Open Cup?  I'm not sure that you do.  United is one win away from playing for its 12th championship.  The only thing standing in the way of another title shot is the New England Revolution.  We need you to be at RFK Stadium next Tuesay.  We need you to bring friends and family that are willing to yell, chant, cheer and go crazy.  We need our home field advantage.

We sat down with Tom Soehn, Bryan Namoff and Santino Quaranta yesterday to talk about the team's long-standing rivalry with the Revs and asked them about next week's game.  It's big, folks.

Get.  Your.  Tickets.  Now

Here's a look at United's history in the Open Cup.  Lots of juicy tidbits.

Tony's Take: Bouncing back, looking ahead

08/06/2008 12:00 PM by Tony Limarzi

062508_Limarzi.jpg

Everybody pretty much agrees that the regular season in MLS is a little bit long.  There are so many ups and downs that it's difficult to maintain maximum focus every time you step on the field.  In short, there are very few (if any) critical regular season MLS matches played in August: except maybe for this past weekend at R.F.K. Stadium.

Entering Saturday's match, D.C. United had lost four in a row [three SuperLiga games and one League match] and were taking on a team that was considered to be on the rise.  The good news for D.C. was that for the first time in a long while they had a regular work week with no mid-week games.  And, in spite of the missing personnel, they still had two of the best players in the League.  Those two players provided the two goals in a comprehensive 2-0 win over Kansas City, as finally the defense collected their long-awaited first MLS shutout of the season.

As for the two key players, they were both involved in the first goal.  Jaime Moreno picked up his 96th career assist, playing a ball into the feet of Luciano Emilio.  His first touch took him around Jimmy Conrad, his second touch put the ball in the back of the net.  Luciano Emilio has been on a torrid goal-scoring streak.  He's played so well during the past two months that he is once again in the running for league MVP.  Not only is he scoring goals, but his team is winning.  That's something that cannot be said about the other players at the top of the race for the Golden Boot.

Meanwhile Jaime Moreno continues to quietly be the best player in the history of MLS.  Every match seems to be another chance for Moreno to showcase re-discovered abilities that continue to impress and confuse opponents.  The Wizards were fouling Moreno at every opportunity, but only about half of them were called.  The referee was very lenient in not booking defenders for repeat offending, and it looked like Moreno was unhappy with the ref and Kansas City.  Moreno struck back in the best way possible, heading in the insurance goal off a free kick.  After the game Jaime said he couldn't remember the last time he scored off a header, interestingly enough it was in 2006 against Kansas City, off of a free kick.

Things have been coming in bunches for D.C. this season: the losses, the wins, the goals, the injuries.  Everything seems to happen all at once, or not for a long time.  That's another reason why the Wizards game could prove very valuable over the next weeks.  Coach Soehn always says that winning is a habit, and now they've started a new winning streak as they enter another busy and important stretch.  This Sunday, the team will play at the Meadowlands against New York, then they have the Open Cup semifinal on Tuesday, another road game in Chicago that Saturday, and then another mid-week game in New England the following Wednesday.  That's three road matches in a row in League play.

It's fitting that New York is the first obstacle on the road ahead.  The D.C. – N.Y. rivalry has been a little one-sided lately, but I can promise you that D.C. will not be looking past the Red Bulls.  New York is only three points behind United in the standings, and they'll be looking to avenge the 4-1 defeat they suffered at the hands of D.C. June.   Plus, both the teams in this rivalry tend to springboard after beating the other.  The players and coaches for D.C. are not overly concerned about the busy stretch of games; they're just looking forward to playing as well as they did on Saturday.

Reserves fall to Kansas City 4-2

08/03/2008 1:01 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Below is the official game summary from the reserves 4-2 loss to the Wizards this morning.  Of note, Ben Olsen's older brother Jeremy did see the field, coming on at half and playing 25 minutes.  Additionally, after being out for a number of weeks, both Jeff Carroll and Dan Stratford made their returns today coming on as second half substitutes.

D.C. United reserves fall 4-2 to Kansas City Wizards reserves

August 3, 2008 (Washington, DC) – The D.C. United reserves fell 4-2 to the visiting Kansas City reserves at the D.C. United training complex Sunday morning.  Goals from four different Wizards players were the difference as the Reserve Division leaders increased their first place standing over second place United.

Though the first half saw fairly even play throughout, it was Kansas City who got off several long range shots, as Ivan Trujillo, Ryan McMahen and Ryan Pore each tried their luck from distance. United’s best chance – and only shot on goal – of the first half came when Jeremy Barlow collected the ball 25 yards from goal, turned and struck a bending shot that fell fairly easily into the hands of goalkeeper Eric Kronberg.

With just a minute left in the half, a defensive turnover led to Nelson Pizarro being put behind the defense alone.  A recovering Mike Zaher made contact with the KC forward from behind sending Pizarro to the ground.  The referee’s quick whistle indicated a penalty kick for the visitors, which Ryan Pore calmly stuck in the lower left corner as goalkeeper James Thorpe guessed incorrectly.

The second half saw the Wizards increase their lead to 4-0 within the half’s first twenty minutes.  Substitute Kevin Souter put an immediate stamp on the game when he sliced from right to left and struck a bending shot to the far post in the 49th.  Three minutes later, Pore collected a loose ball and slid down the center of the field untouched before pushing a square ball to a waiting Trujillo eight yards from goal for an easy put away.  The visitors’ final tally of the day came in the 63rd minute when a defensive breakdown led to an odd-man rush.  On the right side of the field Michael Kraus fed Trujillo centrally who then fed the ball left to a wide open Lance Watson.  The midfielder drew one defender, but cut the ball back onto his left before finishing.

United fought back down the stretch, tallying two late goals.  The first came when midfielder Craig Thompson sent a ball from the right side into the goal box.  The ball careened off the head of Jeremy Barlow and a Wizards defender and fell to the foot of Quavas Kirk who collected and fired to the far post from eight yards.  Three minutes from time, Ryan Cordeiro sent a long diagonal ball to a sprinting Rod Dyachenko.  The second half sub collected the ball, sent it between a Wizards defender’s leg and then finished at the near post for the final score of the evening.  A Kansas City handball in the penalty area gave D.C. a chance to get within one, but Cordeiro slipped and sent the ball over the bar in the game’s final minute.

The loss moves United’s record to 4-3-1 (13 points) in the Reserve Division, while the Wizards improve to 5-1-2 (17 points).

Elder Olsen to make his debut?

08/02/2008 11:14 PM by Kyle Sheldon

Everyone knows Ben Olsen.  One of the most popular players on the team since his rookie year in 1998, the tenacious midfielder has already cemented himself in United history as one of the best.  You may not, however, know his older brother Jeremy.

Best by injuries in recent weeks, United's coaching staff has called upon the elder Olsen - who has been in D.C. for much of the summer helping Ben remodel his house - to suit up for tomorrow morning's reserve game.  The reserves will play the Wizards at the D.C. United training complex at 10 a.m. and though Jeremy may or may not see the field, he'll be there, ready to go.

We caught up with Benny after the game to get the scoop on his big brother.

BehindTheBadge.com:  When was the last time your brother played competitive soccer?
Ben:  When I asked him that question, he asked me if co-ed counted.  Not a good sign.

btb.com:  What type of player is Jeremy?
Ben:  He's a typical Olsen player - scrappy.  Fiery.  He loves contact.

btb.com:  What position does he play?
Ben:  I'm not sure.  He's versatile.  His versatility is unmatched.

btb.com:  How old is he?
Ben:  No one's really sure.

btb.com:  What number will be wearing?
Ben:  I sure hope he's wearing #14.

btb.com:  Will you be in attendance to cheer him on?
Ben:  I am going early with popcorn.

Game time is 10 a.m. and admission is free and open to the public.  The Wizards Reserves are in first place and United is just a point behind in second.  You can see a map of the training fields here

MLS game #17: DCU 2 - KC 0

08/02/2008 10:20 PM by Kyle Sheldon

080208_Moreno_P.jpg

I wouldn't necessarily call that the prettiest game the team has played all year, but you can't argue with the fact that the effort was there from all thirteen players that put on the United kit tonight.  A goal each from the starting forwards and the first League shutout of the year for goalkeeper Zach Wells and the team.  A great result to build off of.

We'll be back in a bit with some photos and post-game quotes.

UPDATE:  Post game quotes below and a couple of photos on the Video & Pics page.

D.C. UNITED HEAD COACH TOM SOEHN
On the team’s performance
That was probably one of my more satisfying games. It was nice to have a full week to work on things, especially with so many guys out, we wanted to make sure we maintained the discipline and work hard and make sure everyone took defending first. I don’t think we created as many chances but the dedication to work and get back behind the ball and competing was ten-fold better. And that’s what you need to get shutouts and obviously the shutout goes right along with it.

On who was good individually
I’m happy with a lot of guys. I said this before, we’ve thrown our young guys in tough situations and part of the growth process is that you get the experience and today a couple of guys stepped up and did a real good job. Ivan [Guerrero] showed his value, what he brings. He’s a tough worker and fits in with the dynamics of how you play. And Joe Vide stepped up and did a solid job in the middle. I thought competitively it was day and night [to last week].

On taking pressure off the defense
Not only take the pressure of the central defense but also give your flanks a little more room to get forward. We knew what Ivan [Guerrero] was about and him and having him and Fred having the ability to attack more obviously is going to make us a dangerous team. He did a great job of giving us some width.

On having so many new guys on the field
We had a week to work. Ivan [Guerrero] we didn’t have much time to work with but he’s got a great soccer intelligence. When you make decisions on guys you bring in, you try to see them in your environment and Ivan’s perfectly situated. For him to step in our environment it’s a perfect situation for him.

On signing a third goalkeeper
You always want competitions for spots and we’re going to bring another goalie in. It’s not the new goalie’s job, it’s not Zach’s job. It’s whoever wins the job. If he [Zach] keeps playing like that he’s going to keep it real competitive because today he made some game-savers. He was very sharp today.

On Pat Carroll
One of the things he did better today was when he won the ball he was clean and he made sure he that the balls were played into Jaime [Moreno]’s feet and Luci [Emilio]’s feet. He competed hard. He did a great job today. But again that’s the experience we’re talking about. He’s put in some tough spots but he’s grown. You start learning a lot about your young guys.

On looking ahead to League and Open Cup matches
Marc Burch is going to play a lot of minutes [against New York] because he can’t play in the Open Cup game. But we’re getting some guys back. I joked around today that there was a herd of guys running around the field getting healthy. It’s nice to see that we’re making progress on some of those guys and it will give us a few options. Obviously we’re going to have to be careful not to rush them back. Their fitness is going to struggle. Some of our young guys now gained some valuable experiences for situations just like this.

D.C. UNITED MIDFIELDER CLYDE SIMMS
On getting the win
It was great. We worked real hard this week especially at the end of the week on our shape in the back – and having Joe [Vide] in there helped a ton. He was great defensively. Any time you have a bunch of guys in there that are working hard and talking a lot it’s going to make it hard for the opposing team. I think that made a huge difference in the game tonight.

On Ivan Guerrero
I always knew he was a good player. Usually, I hate playing against him so it’s good to have him on the team now. I thought he was great as well.

On Jaime Moreno and team defense
What can you say? It’s Jaime. [He] Doesn’t really surprise me when he has performances like this. I think everyone did the job defensively, even Jaime and Luciano [Emilio] and I think that was the difference in the game. With our previous games we didn’t [defend] as a team and we did well not pushing too many guys forward on the attack. Fortunately it was a well-played game as a team and we got the results because of it.

D.C. UNITED FORWARD LUCIANO EMILIO
On the win
When the team scored first and we started to play better. When we play at home we need to score first.

On the Golden Boot race
Sometimes I think about it because I can win again the Golden Boot. Just one more goal to tie with Landon [Donovan]. I score first for the team. When our team wins, everybody’s happy. But I think I have a big chance to win the Golden Boot again.

D.C. UNITED DEFENDER MARC BURCH
On Pat Carroll’s performance
Pat [Carroll]’s a real physical guy and real athletic. He showed up and he’s battling for every play and doing really well.

On chemistry with Ivan Guerrero
It was good. He’s a hard worker; he’s a good player. He works hard to get open and I just fed him the ball. He looked real good out there working hard on the offense and getting back on defense.

On his assist on Jaime Moreno’s goal
Jaime’s good at headers, he’s good at flicking balls in. He had one in the first half that he almost flicked in. He made a good run and I was working a little bit [during the week] on getting the ball by the first guy and finally Jaime flicked one and it went in.

D.C. UNITED GOALKEEPER ZACH WELLS
On the game
I thought it was a good defensive performance by everyone. I thought it was a good organized defensive performance from everyone.  When a team works that hard it makes it easier when everyone can read plays and play off that offensively. We worked really hard defensively and stayed compact. I thought Joe Vide and Ivan [Guerrero] did a really good job coming in, made a difference for us.

On getting the first League shutout of the season
I thought ‘finally’. Finally. It was a long time coming. We’re just trying to get better every week and as a team we worked really well together. We were organized in the back. We played our guts out and it showed.

On the team’s performance
I think it was a complete performance. We worked really hard and made it a point to get guys behind the ball no matter what the score was and it showed. We still got a few goals, which says a lot about our attacking players. It was good because I felt like everyone defended and it wasn’t just about the attack. That’s the thing to do going forward.

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH CURT ONALFO
On the game
Certainly, losing Josh [Wolff] the day before a game is an adjustment but every team has to deal with that. I thought we played a lackadaisical, not very sharp first half. I thought D.C. was by far the better team the first 45 minutes, so I was extremely disappointed in the first 45 minutes of play. Second half, I thought we came out very strong. Davy Arnuad has a chance a minute in, we have a corner kick where Jimmy [Conrad] has a free header and we’ve got a chance to tie the game and we kind of take the game to them.  I don’t know what the stats are but we for sure had a hell of a lot more shots than them in the second half.

On Jaime Moreno’s goal
I don’t know the exact minute of the free kick, but it was a hell of a goal  by Jaime [Moreno].  There’s no two ways about it – that’s a great goal. Our defender was in a pretty good position in terms of where he was defending it. Sometimes you have to take your hat off to a world-class goal.

On the loss
When you come out the way you did the first 45 minutes against a good team – with players like Moreno, Emilio and Fred – you set yourself up for a difficult night. So, I think our approach and our first half mentality ended up being the reason we lost the game.

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER JIMMY CONRAD
On Luciano Emilio and Jaime Moreno
Emilio is very direct in his play – he’s kind of like a bull in a china shop. And he does well to create space for himself.  If he got a half chance, I figured maybe he’d put it away. That’s why he was MVP last year and it seems he’s rounding back into form. Moreno is just crafty and you have to pay attention to him no matter where he is on the field.

On not scoring lately
We know we’ve been hard pressed to score consistently and we understand that playing good defenses – I mean that’s the key to any good team winning games, we know what’s where it starts and you know they turned a half chance into a goal and then we were fighting an uphill battle and tonight D.C. was just a better team.

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER MATT MARQUESS
On his Wizards debut
Curt [Onalfo] talked to me just before halftime and said to me I might get a chance in the second half and said just play confident and do what I can do and I thought I stuck to that pretty well, but it’s a tough game. They’re attacking core is real strong, real quick guys and caused a lot of problems in the back, but overall we had our chances to win we just couldn’t put it away.

DCU vs. KC: Starting lineups

This is what they'll look like on the field:

MLS game #17: DCU vs. KC

08/02/2008 10:09 AM by Kyle Sheldon

D.C. United gets back into it tonight when the Kansas City Wizards visit RFK Stadium at 7:30 p.m.  United and the Wizards are two of four Eastern Conference teams currently tied for fourth place with 22 points each, so tonight's game serves as an opportunity to provide a little separation in the muddied standings

Head Coach Tom Soehn will once again face the challenge of putting a cohesive unit on the field as several key players remain unavailable for selection.  In addition to several injured players, Gonzalo Martinez will be in the stands due to an automatic one-game suspension following a red card.  Newcomer Ivan Guerrero will be available and could very well find himself in the starting lineup.

With that in mind, here's what you need to read to get fully prepared for this evening's match.  Get it.

  • In the Washington Post, Steve Goff looks at the season so far
  • John Haydon writes about the team's long July and addition of Guerrero in the Washington Times.
  • Charles Boehm says United is looking for a little revenge tonight, via dcunited.com (game notes here).
  • Meanwhile, in KC, Pete Grathoff previews tonight's game with a look at Wizards rookie Nelson Pizzaro.
  • The Capital Weather Gang says it's a nice night for soccer.

Finally, how about some predictions?  As usual, if you pick the right score, you'll have a shot at winning two tickets to an upcoming United game.

Video: Introducing Ivan Guerrero

08/01/2008 4:40 PM by Kyle Sheldon

D.C. United newest player, Ivan Guerrero joined United today for his first training session.  With several injuries still holding players out and Gonzalo Martinez unavailable due to last game's red card, the left-sided player may very well be in the starting lineup tomorrow evening against the Wizards.  We caught up with Ivan this afternoon after practice.  The Honduran is a gentleman and seems very excited to be a part of the Black-and-Red.

What do you think, will we see Señor Guerrero in the starting lineup tomorrow?  With so many players unavailable, what would your starting lineup be?

Fun at DC Improv

08/01/2008 2:30 PM by Kyle Sheldon

080108_Sweeney_cat_P.jpg

What a week of bonding D.C. United's front office and players have had this week.  After a incredible meal at Chima Brazilian Steakhouse on Monday night, a number of players and staff made their way to the DC Improv last night to watch hypnotist Flip Orley perform.  I only wish I possessed the descriptive writing ability needed to accurately describe how hilarious his show is.  Alas, I do not, so you'll just have to believe me - it's hilarious.

At the beginning of the show, Flip asked for volunteers from the audience to come up and be hypnotized.  Both Domenic Mediate and Zach Wells made themselves available and went on stage, but as is sometimes the case did not fully "go under."  So, unfortunately, they weren't a part of the show.  Rachel Sweeney, a United Communications Department intern was, however, and she was hysterical.  I would never be able to fully capture what happened on stage last night, but it had everyone at the show rolling on the floor (not literally, more figuratively).  I'll admit that I've always been very (very) skeptical of hypnosis, but after last night there's no question in my mind that young Rachel was in la-la land.  Let's just say there was a point in the show where she believed her right hand was a sketch artist named Orlando who drew increasingly unkind drawings about Flip. The photo above is Flip's cat, who was angry at him (note that it is signed by 'Orlando').  She also drew Flip's pot of gold - which was empty - at the end of a rainbow, his family being struck by lightening and his car with a flat tire, among other things.  And that's just the scratching the surface.

Flip's show is always great (I've seen him twice now), so if you're looking for something to do this weekend, go check him out at DC Improv (just not on Saturday night because you'll obviously be at RFK Staduim to watch us pound the Wizards).  This weekend's shows are his last in DC, but he usually comes by at least once a year, so keep an eye dcimprov.com

Right place at the right time

08/01/2008 11:24 AM by Kyle Sheldon

On Wednesday morning, D.C. United Academy U-18 player Denillo Lima was out on the RFK Training Fields getting in a little extra training by himself.  One field over, United's first team was beginning their training session.  Then, Denillo was called over by United Head Coach Tom Soehn, who asked if he'd be willing to train with the first team to provide an additional body.  You can probably guess what Denillo said. He spent the next hour running around the field with United's best.  We caught up with Denillo after training to get his thoughts on the experience...
