Dave Johnson on Redskins, Fenty and United

Be sure to keep an eye on wtop.com for Dave Johnson's regular column 'Dave's Take.' His most recent piece is especially a good read. He discussed Mayor Fenty's recent comments about trying to get the Redskins back in D.C. and how it is "a slap in the face" to D.C. United. Give it a read here.
Dave Johnson is the voice of D.C. United on Comcast SportsNet and has been calling United game since the team's first season. He is easily one of the best play-by-play men in U.S. soccer. He can also often be heard on Fox Soccer Channel when not calling United games. Oh, by the way, he's also the radio play-by-play guy for the Wizards and the Sports Director for WTOP. Safe to say, he keeps pretty busy.

That was a good article.
I can't help but think it's not getting done because most of them don't like soccer or something. The baseball stadium got done quick enough.
If I'm not mistaken, the Nationals have a huge high-def TV in their stadium that cost 200 million dollars, the same price DC could have gotten their stadium for.
Anyone remember a game a couple years ago where Fenty came to RFK and promised us a stadium? He held up a United jersey with "Stadium" on the name and "09" the number.
yea right.

We need more of a similar voice of Mr. Johnson. Otherwise, it's too difficult because every media in DC is ignoring United while overloading news for other sports in this town. DC Govt's got what they deserved from the Nats, in my opinion. You know what I mean?

Dave Johnson = Class act. Thanks for all you do. My Father in Law is blind and loves the Wizards and he listens to all their games on radio. I'll read this piece to him.

Well written.
And I do agree that it's possible that the DC Government does not want a soccer stadium due to the "popularity" of soccer. However, I believe the gubment doesn't understand is the reality of how popular the sport and team is.
They buy a bottom of the barrel baseball team and provide them with a new stadium within a couple of years, yet there is a high classed and well respected team that get's the shaft.
Honestly, I dont want to have to drive out to MD to watch the games. Driving to DC is bad enough, but always well worth the drive with the comradary with the fans cheering on their way back to Lot 8.
There does need to be more "voices" out there speaking out for a great team with years of tradition. It saddens and disgusts me to continue to hear how Fenty is not supportive of a DC United stadium.
