MLS Game #8: DCU 1 - Chivas USA 3

05/18/2008 3:23 AM by Kyle Sheldon

We're back to D.C. first thing in the morning. Here's the dcunited.com recap

Post-game quotes below.

D.C. UNITED HEAD COACH TOM SOEHN
On the change in the game in the second half:
“I think we came out in the second half and we weren’t good enough with the ball, so that was disappointing. We gave away the ball too much and then we gave them a lot of  confidence to put pressure on us. But the first half I thought we had a game plan and we stuck to it, we were hard to play against, we got our goal. In the second half they came out with a bit more intensity and I don’t think we handled it well.”

On how difficult this loss is:
“It’s very emotionally draining. We put a lot of work into making sure we were doing the things we talked about all week; being harder to play against. And then we threw caution to the wind after they scored and started taking chances and taking risks, and they punished us.”

On if there are specific solutions:
“Well, we’re going to go back and hopefully we get a couple guys back but everybody’s still got to dig deeper. Games aren’t won over 60 minutes, it’s 90 minutes, and I thought we had about 60 minutes in us and that’s not good enough in this league.”

D.C. UNITED FORWARD JAIME MORENO
On the loss:
“It’s another disappointment. It’s sad that we worked so hard for 65 minutes and then we gave everything away. It’s only us; we’ve got to fix it.”
On if the confidence is dropping in the team:
Not really. It’s just we make mistakes, it’s very simple. You can’t make mistakes and that’s what we’ve got to eliminate.”

On the team's effort:
I liked our effort for 65 minutes and after the that, the game changed and really we gave the game away. Nothing can have a positive when you lose. We've got to play for 90 minutes, it's very simple.

At the start of the season I read an article in praise of the Toronto fans of 2007. Cheering and supporting no matter what. I did not think I would have to dig so deep, so soon to emulate them. Last night was humiliating and embarassing from my living room. I pity the Bara Brava fans that made the trip to LA, because they made more effort than the team. I know money is the bottom line for so many things, but surely D.C. could have afforded to keep Christian Gomez and bring in Gallardo. What about a more seasoned goalie? We need guys like Ben, Fred and Christian to fire up the passion. Jaime can't do it alone.

Supporting a first year expansion team, regardless of their form, is one thing. Supporting a 4-time MLS Cup champion and 4-time Supporter Shield Winner, is a different thing.

United's players need to be held responsible for their failure to win games. They're professional athletes in a League that is as far the toughest league in the world as United is from being the best team in the League. The mistakes they're making on the field shouldn't need a new coach to solve. What they need is gut check.

Are they going to allow players like Atiba Harris to muscle them off the ball?

Are they going to allow their play-maker to get man handled over and over again?

Where is the fight? Where is the pride? Where are the men will who will stand up for United?

I agree with TCompton, the players need to be held accountable for their performance. DC looked pretty good, it reminded me of why DC is such a good team.

But when the whole team takes off 10 minutes, it can ruin it for you. Another one down the drain and I'm sure there are calls for Tommy's head. I dont blame Tommy totally. Yes, I question some of his decisions, but ultimately, the team has to perform. And they are not performing completely.

Players got out played for 25 minutes. Coach got outcoached for 50. Simple as that. Everyone on this team needs to take stock of what they should be contributing and what they actually are contributing.

As a fan, I'll keep cheering and singing for home games, and scream at the TV when they are on the road. That's all I can really do at this point...

How 'bout we turn this season around now?

Well here we are at the bottom of the table. I think this is seriously causing my migraines. I'm mildly depressed because of their play. Yeah we miss C. Gomez and we are missing Perkins in goal. We really miss Josh Gros getting up and down the flank. The bottom line is we have the players who we have we have and they were brought here for a reason. We need a collective effort and the right leadership to get back to the glory.

Regardless of our current situation, I will never stop supporting this club. Best of times or worst of times, FOREVER UNITED!

Hey look, I don't care about the excuses, you guys get paid to win, losing a little is ok, but this is rediculous. My problem started when Tommy "Boy" Soehn got rid of Epren for Peralta (a 2nd division player from Argentina), Gallardo (or Larthardo, as I like to call him) for Gomez and the up and comming you defender Bobby Bosworth. Not to mention, using an international slot for a goal keeper whom I haven't seen on the pitch yet, we could have used that spot to keep Gomez. Morrow just got sacked at Dallas FC, time for Tommy "Boy" Soehn to do what Michael Jackson song says: Beat it!, Let's get a real coach like John Harkes or the FSN announcer Sullivan in there.
