MLS Game #3: DCU 0 - Real Salt Lake 4
04/13/2008 12:58 AM by Doug Hicks
Not our best effort tonight, to be sure. Kyle Beckerman scored twice and United suffered its worst defeat in regular season League play since a 1-5 loss in Dallas on July 24, 2004. Our boys fell behind in the 12th minute and failed to get anything going most of the night. Here’s more info for those with strong stomachs.
We’ll all head home tomorrow and start the next workweek Monday morning. We’re back in action against Columbus on Thursday night before a nationwide crowd on espn2. We have the best fans in the League and there's no better time to show it than this week. Buy your tickets, tell your friends and join us at RFK.
The post-game locker room was pretty somber, but here’s some of what was said:
D.C. United Head Coach Tom Soehn
On the defeat:
It was the first time we’ve had to rely on our depth, just because the amount of games we’ve had. We learned a lot. Just coming from a game like Wednesday (against Pachuca) and comparing it to today, it was two different teams.
On what United can take from tonight’s game:
I know our guys are weathered so you have to look past this and move on. Obviously we’ll address some things but, there’s days like this that happen and you have to look beyond that and get ready for the next one.
D.C. United forward Jaime Moreno
Thoughts on the match:
It was a very disappointing performance and we know that each of us should take responsibility for this game.
On playing three games in eight days:
We don’t want poor excuses. We train for a reason and it might affect some players, but this is our job and we definitely have to do a better job.
D.C. United midfielder Clyde Simms
On whether United can take anything away from tonight’s match:
Well, it’s going to be different here, just with the field conditions, so we can’t think about it much. We’ve just got to put it past us.
On D.C.’s team morale after a tough week:
We’ve just gotta get back to the drawing board, get back in practice. We have a couple more days before our next game and a quick turn around after our last game. I’m sure we had a couple of tired legs, but we’ll just get back, get some rest and we’ll be at home next game, which is always a plus for us.

Some of the coaching decisions in this match made no sense. If it was necessary or beneficial to rest players, OK, you rest players. But then you put the players you *are* playing into a formation and tactics that give them the best chance to succeed. A three man backline and four man midfield in which half the starters are from the bench, against a team that likes to run onto longballs and on field turf? It's like the club didn't learn a thing from what happened there last year.

I thought with all the rotation this game that we would get our first look at Kirk. maybe next time

Tough break.
Although, funny you should mention the 'best fans in the league' thing - since the team which would also make a not-inconsiderable claim to that title (or who would share the honour, in my view) just scored a victory down at the HDC, and look set to show their fans at BMO Field something worth watching this Saturday!
As a United fan rueing the loss this weekend, and a TFC fan glad to see the Reds beat the Galaxy, I'm doubly hoping that Toronto FC give Real a hiding next weekend...
(To clarify - D.C. are my top US team, and TFC my top Canadian one. Bit of a loophole, perhaps, but it works for me!)

I apreciated Jaime's sense of personal responsibility of every player for the loss, and no excuses. The turf field is very different from grass, and I know one goal was a direct reflection on the difference of the bounce, but it is not a good enough excuse.
The optimism in general surrounding American football is a little sickening. In any game, D.C. for example, 4-1, 3-0, 4-0 score lines are embarrassing for the league, the margins reflect sloppy football.

I want to know where the goalkeeping is this year. Both keepers have looked horrible. Rimando showed us we made a mistake letting him go.

IMO the mistake wasn't letting Rimando go but letting Perkins go to Norway. I'm confident both GK's will improve under Simpson. He's done great work in the past.

The Goal keeping has left me with shorter fingernails so far this season. I agree with Bill that both keepers will improve. I think that we will benefit more if we can establish competition for the first choice position. The Salt Lake Game cannot be put on the goal keepers though . The defending was very laxed to be generous to the boys. My question is this for the return fixtures.......WHO IS GOING TO MARK KYLE BECKERMAN????
