Champions' Cup: DCU 0 - Pachuca 2

04/02/2008 1:22 AM by Kyle Sheldon

That, obviously, was not the result the team was hoping for. All were disappointed and expected better, but Pachuca is a very strong team and showed their quality tonight.

Head Coach Tom Soehn spoke with media after the game. Here are a few excerpts from what he had to say:

"Pachuca were the better team tonight. We didn't do as well as we wanted to with the soccer side and now we've dug ourselves a hole. We've put ourselves in a tough spot... I think the altitude did have an effect - you could tell our guys we're tired. We've only played a few games and Pachuca showed they are fit... We'll look forward to getting them back at RFK, but we've definitely dug ourselves a hole."

The return leg takes place next Wednesday, April 9, at RFK Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. United will need to win by two goals in order to send the game to overtime. Should the game remain tied after two 15-minute overtime periods, the game would be decided by penalty kicks. A three-goal win in regulation would send D.C. to the finals. Away goals are not weighted in Champions' Cup play.

The team bus departs at 5 a.m. tomorrow for the airport. Ouch.

I would like to see Carvallo in goal.
and a little less optimism would be nice from or news sources/commentary.

Ditto. Wells was flat footed on both goals. Hindsight is 20/20, but DC could have "escaped" Hidalgo with a draw, now they've got to climb out of a pretty big hole. Give the "El Cholo" a try...

I disagree, The Eaglew did us proud, they played their hearts out dispite the high altitude and playing an away game. They lost, but not 7-0, or 4-2. The score is not as bad as we think. We showed flashes of creativity. Now, back at home, it's our turn. We can turn this around, I beleive in United.

DC can win it at home. We won't be tired from the altitude or travel and we'll have some more time together. Vamos United!

Pachuca showed their strength in the back, I think being down two goals is a big hole but Ill be there to cheer my drunken heart out none the less.

also, in double hindsight, Wells was worrying too much about the cross, where or defenders should be worrying about rather than the ball on the first goal (sorry run on). And on the second he was focused more on the ball and the defense let an unmarked runner through.

Its not so much Wells did a bad job, it just seems like he is on a different page than the back four, which is why I want to see Carvallo have a shot.
wells has not shown up the way Perkins did the last few years, I fear Im going to miss him at number 1

Who are the Eagles?!?! We are DC United! Maybe even the "Red & Black", not the Eagles! Also losing 4-2 would be the same as the score last night 2-0.

Pachuca was the better team, by far. We are quite lucky we got away with only a two goal margin.

D.C. did fairly well with holding and passing the ball; but I did not see any creativity within 25 yards of goal. I can not count the number of times I saw them work the ball forward, have to play it back to the halfline, and then just shoot a long ball over the top. To very little effect I might add. Pachuca constantly had more people in front of the ball, were creative deeper on the pitch, and created numerous great chances for themselves.

It may be simply a case of a lot of new faces learning to play together. (I hope!) Some of the guys gave good performances. Still...not enough going on near goal.
